Maxima 6 lb is my weapon of choice on all light-line applications.

for me it is the best combo of price, castability, strength, etc. I usually shoot it up with some reel magic when I first put it on, and then a little more as needed.

Personally I have to have the bait on the bottom. Have yet to catch one on the drop. Caught 100s on it last year. Quicker to the bottom the better for me

It will work as a bottom bait, no doubt. but you may be smoking it right past others that are willing to bite a slow fall bait.

However, most folks aren't spending 1/2day on the same point or boat dock like some of us do.

It will catch bottom dwellers & suspenders alike, it just depends on how much time your willing to spend at each spot.

The reason for the braid is to eliminate the conventional hookset.

I use a drop shot or minnow bobber type of hookset, just lean into the fish & start reeling.

I can't do that with standard mono or copoly, it has too much stretch IMO.

To each their own, everybody learns at a different speed with different circumstances.

The rod is a much bigger player in this type of fishing than the line. You use the correct rod for the deal and you will have no trouble with the hook set on the mono-verse the braid and I'm lumping Nanofil in this category.

I have been using a Jeff Kriet Squirrel tail for the past two years, and it is perfect for the rig. I have also used a Falcon Nestor Falls spin and it works just about as well.

I can cast the 6# Maxi just as far as I can the 6 to 8 pound braid products, and not have to worry about it breaking on the cast. Nanofil or any of the braid products work extremely well on the feel, or the straight line pull, it is the cast that seems to separate you from your hard earned expensive lures.

I know we are mixing here on the Ned topic, but really I don't think myself or my clients are missing a lot of fish, or for that matter breaking any off. None that I can remember. Same with Beck.

Don't forget the Ned for around docks, where the slow descent is key. My biggest SM of last year was from the front of a deep dock, and he hit it about halfway down.

the old Maxima held up even though I initially had it rubbing on a cable.

I forgot to mention the slow drop is deadly around docks during the post spawn.

The line argument will rage on forever.

I've been outfished by a buddy that only uses co-poly. But after they tried my braid setup, they could tell a huge difference in sensitivity.

Just a thought

That's amazing. I've caught more than a couple on the silly little thing too and many, many of my fish grab it before it can make it to the bottom on the initial drop. Lot's of ways to skin a cat though. Whatever works for you.

One thing you have to remember is that 90% of the time, BB is working with people who don't know a bite from a boomerang. Having guide experience myself, it's a rare client who could pick up on a fish intercepting a lightly weighted varmint fluttering to the bottom in a strong wind. Dave, I know you're gonna say your kids do just fine, but trust me, they are better anglers than most adult guide clients.

I've really come around on the nanofil. Have to admit it took a while. 8 lb nano with 4 lb p-line or 4 lb maxima for leader. Still use a LOT of 4 lb maxima on just about everything else. But I fish flowing water almost exclusively. Trust me on this, the ned will outfish nearly anything else nearly all the time, especially if you want numbers.

Man I'm learning so much my head is fixn to explode then Champ tosses in the "don't know a bite from a boomerang" and I about fell out of my chair :=D: :=D: .

I never have guided, but have friends who do and I have heard some Hum Dingers. My hat is off to our guides around here on these clear water Highland reservoirs and to share knowledge like this they and the whole OA group are top notch. I'm fixn to order some of the Zinkerz and go with that as my starting point. Thanks again I didn't mean to high jack the original idea on this tread. It just is cool to bounce these ideas off knowledgeable heads
