Ham Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 Champ, I love the concept. Maybe I just need another whacko willing to sit STILL and work a single small bluff line for a couple of hours to have a little more success. So far on my FNF. I've caught a handful of bass, a double handful of crappie, some white bass ( I eventually got frustrated with missed stikes and went to a straight grub set up) , a few bluegill, and a few rainbow trout. I'm going to try to run my big boat at least once a month until the water warms up. I might need to make FNF trip. Fish24/7 1 Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. Champ188 Posted January 9, 2015 Author Posted January 9, 2015 Well, it's going to be a challenge for me to slow down and fish it correctly, as well. I'm a winder from way back but I'm gonna give it a whirl. Gotta admit, it's not nearly as tempting to "run and gun" when the high temp is in the 30s.
Quillback Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 I'll probably toss it around some myself. I had one day last year where I caught something like 10 Kentucks on it off a bluff end. Had the bobber pulled down on something like 15 straight casts. Other than that, my other attempts with the FNF have been futile.

I may even take it over to Tenkiller and see if Donna and I can catch some K's to eat. No size and no creel limits in Oklahoma on spots -- only on a few specific lakes. They're begging people to take them home.
rps Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Seems to me the way to throw a fixed bobber bait with a 13 foot leader would be some sort of helicopter move - kinda like throwing a lasso. Can you see Champ up in the front of the boat, winding up, while Donna is in the back ducking in time to his circles? Champ188 1
trapshot25 Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 I've found that it help to let jig sink in water on back cast. Help load the rod almost like a fly rod cast. Then lob it out there, little hard in wind. I can cast about 10 feet under bobber with 7 1/2 foot rod.

Just for the record, the last person to get smacked in our boat was ME. I was sitting on the rod box while Donna ran the trolling motor ... working on a bait for her, no less ... and got plastered right in the earhole with a Keitech swimbait. Fortunately, I only got smacked and not skewered. No doubt, there will be some shenanigans involved with this F&F rig. Stay tuned. I'll try to get some iPhone video posted in the coming days/weeks. Quillback Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Personally, I don't let the fly hit the water on the back cast. Kind of like using a fly rod, when you feel the fly give your rod a little tug at the end of the back cast, that's when I begin the forward motion. And you want to lob it out there, you don't want to create a whiplash effect on the forward motion. Takes a little getting used to, but it's surprising how far you can throw that light bobber and fly on a good cast.
dtrs5kprs Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Thought the reason to not let it hit on the backcast was to keep the bail from being snapped shut. Or so I was told. Maybe we should do it like the long line crankbait guys...drop the deal over the side on the bluff end or by the tree, leave the bail open, and trolling motor about 20 yards away...
