Quillback Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but an expensive reel with gummed up spool bearings will cast like a dog. Keeping a reel clean and well lubed can really help when it comes to casting distance. Champ188 1
balsabee Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 A $25 on sale ten ball bearing Academy H2O Mettle reel cast a long way!! Not one single issue yet. So good I bought 12 at that price.
Champ188 Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 But you are DEAD ON about casting distance on the Rock. Long casts are KEY for cranks, jerk baits and most moving baits. Not only because of water clarity and not spooking fish but also having that bait in the strike zone and working an area more effectively with long thorough casts. Good point Champ. Also easier to work angles with boat position on long casts. One idea might be to go ahead and buy some of the $50 PQs but maybe not quite as many, saving some money back for one higher-quality reel. There are baits like regular ballhead jigs, Senkos, etc. that you don't need to throw as far, and frankly, a football jig is heavy enough that you can pretty much launch it out there on just about any reel. But for your jerk baits (tough to throw in some conditions on ANY reel), Warts, topwaters, etc., you might have yourself a couple of the better, smoother reels. And you don't have to break the bank to buy a nice reel that will throw a mile. I have several of the $149 Lew's Tournament Series (TS1H) reels and just love 'em. Do the trade-in deal at BPS and you can knock em down lower. I believe you can get a nice long-sleeve microfiber T-shirt from Lew's too, although not sure. I'm way too big for a 2XL, which is their largest size, so I never pursued getting any. Now if they start offering sublimated pro-style jerseys, by gosh I'm getting all of those they'll let me have. Hell, I'll sew two of them together if I have to in order to make one to fit me. Dewayne French 1

I have nothing bad to say about either but I still prefer my green E7 Curado to anything else. I also don't need to buy ANYMORE REELS. You are an enabler you know that Champ!?
evilcatfish Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 I don't have a PQ so take this with a grain of salt, but I think getting it tuned and the bearings upgraded could easily make it perform like a much higher end reel. I have a Okuma Citrix I got cheap on ebay which was an "ok" reel but after getting the bearings upped to Boca Abec 7s it casts better than my 2 Helios and on par with my nicer Daiwas Champ188 1

I have a bunch of the old CU200 Curados that are finally starting to wear out to the point that I don't want to invest in new bearings and such for them. I do have one E7 and it's a darn fine reel. In fact, it's one of my jerk bait reels in the winter. I like the 7:1 for getting the jerk bait down to max depth with just a few turns of the reel handle.

Always looking for cheap Planos and hook deals.

Members fishdoctor Posted January 21, 2015 Members Posted January 21, 2015 Champ, If you still have those Johnny Morris reels I would be interested in purchasing from you. As far as PQ's, I have seen Edwin Evers cast them a pretty good ways. He likes them just fine.
