MeatintheFreezer Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 I am looking for a starter truck for my soon-to-be 16 year old son. I would like to stay in the $2000-$2500 range, but might splurge for the right vehicle. It must be mechanically sound, have clear title, and able to pass state inspection. If it looks good that's a plus. Preferably full size 4x4, but willing to consider all options. I would like to stay within 50 miles of Aurora, Mo., but I would venture out for the right deal. I have cash in hand, so PM my a pic and a brief description and let me know what you are asking. Remember - If at first you DO succeed, try not to act surprised & quit while you're ahead.
Pepe Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 Good for you in teaching your son to buy what there is cash in hand for. I hope you find the perfect vehicle. My wife and I completed the Dave Ramsey Financial Coach training in Nashville last year and are working through our church to help get that message to young people before they get buried in debt. uptonfish 1
MeatintheFreezer Posted February 6, 2015 Author Posted February 6, 2015 Thanks,I really enjoyed the course. He doesn't reveal anything that is really groundbreaking, most of what he says is simply common sense that most people have probably thought of or even already tried. He does, however, put it together into a package that is hard dismiss. I get a kick out of hearing his seminars, he's an intertaining speaker. I wish his course was a manditory high school class! Jerry Rapp Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I really doubt if you find a truck as described. Good luck, and kudos to the common sense thing. Can't spend what you don't have. I do have a 1998 Oldsmobile 88 in good condition. It was my old commuter car to St. Louis. I retired 3 years ago. I got it from a little old lady who was my mom. It has 145,000 or so on it. When I got it there was about 25,000 miles on it, the rest are highway miles. But as most late 90's the paint is peeling off. It is basically the perfect beater car, but not a truck. If you or anyone is interested, let me know. I have no idea of a value at this point. We still drive it 40 to 50 miles a week. The MPG is 25+ on the road.
GloryDaze Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 Not trying to be Mr. Paranoid here, but with the internet these days just be careful anytime you let someone know you have cash in hand. That sucker set me back $3,500. Piece of junk but proud to say i paid for it all myself. Follow me on Twitter @DazeGlory

MeatintheFreezer Posted February 24, 2015 Author Posted February 24, 2015 My boy has been mowing lawns in our neighborhood since he was 13 as well. His first $1500 dollars he saved went into a roth IRA I set up for him. I told him that as he saved for a truck, I would match dollar for dollar what ever he saved. I also made him the deal that if he maintained a B average, I would pay his first 6 months of insurance. He has held up his end of the deal on both, so I have held up my end. He is a great kid, never had a bit of trouble with him. As long as he continues to work at it, I don't mind helping him out when he needs it. ollie Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Look on Craigslist for my old Chevy truck. It's an s-10 1990 with over 200,000 miles and still runs great! $1500 It has been there and back and I wouldn't be afraid to go there again with it. It was top of the line when it came out. Tahoe edition for this truck. I bought another one not long ago and I have to part with one of them. Try and google a pic of an s-10 from 1990 that has extended cab and is the Tahoe edition. I have yet to find a pic of one on the net. If interested I would be glad to send some different pics. I'm in Neosho as well. snagged in outlet 3 Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 I don't let my daughter work at all. We have a deal. She takes care of business and I give her whatever she wants. Honor student in all advance placement classes and plays on the high school soccer team and swim team. She is in the 4.0 GPA Athletes club and does her chores around the house. Her business is to finish college and probably grad school. After that she can get a job that pays her well enough to do buy anything she wants. FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE. When I grew up we all worked as soon as we could get paid to do something. Then we got out of high school and went to work instead of going to college. We went to work so we could gst that paycheck that seemed large at the time. BIG mistake. I worked at GM for 15 years and got my degree so I could get out of there. It was a nice living but it is limited as far as income. Nothing worse than giving away your future for a little money now. Fire away. Pete
fishinwrench Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Pete, either you are filthy stinkin' rich.....or your daughter doesn't have the same insatiable appetite for shopping and expensive attire that mine does. No really, her SHOES cost more than my TRUCK ! Therefore she works AND STILL stays on the Dean's list.
