Working up a new recipe creation. If it works it will become a blog post. One Pot Seven Spice Chicken and Rice with Broccoli, Cauliflower, and Mushrooms. We will see.

Well it tasted good, but it was butt ugly. The broccoli had started to turn gray and the rice was mud colored. I am thinking of changing the spices. How does miso curry rice and lemon chicken sound?

Learned things today.

Today, Nancy and I did an old guys version of Road Rules. You younger people may need to Google that title to understand.
We got on a bus at 9:30 AM and drove to the Tall Grass Prairie Preserve to see the large bison herd. On the way there, a turkey flew across the road in front of us. We saw blue stem grasses revitalized by controlled burns. We saw sand plums in bloom. We saw deer rather like after thoughts. We saw wild horses that had never been saddle broken. We went through Barnsdall, Pawhuska, and Dewey. All are in the middle of "The Killers of the Harvest Moon." That movie will be out in the next two years.
Once home we collapsed.
I thawed some pasta sauce and threw it on penne.
We had an outstanding day.

We did a weekend down in Pawhuska a couple years ago. Fun trip. Learned a little about the Osage murders. Fascinating story. Beautiful country down there-kinda the south edge of the Flint Hills.

Did you eat anywhere good?

Had lunch at the 125 Diner downtown. Good onion rings. Too much burger. From what I saw and smelled, order the chili cheese fries.

Made tabouli today and then made my second attempt at cabbage rolls. This batch had improvements over the last batch, but still is not perfect.

Lamb, seven spice, garlic, rice, lemon juice!, some tomato. Needs more tomato and rice a bit more firm.

Wife went shopping while I did chores today.  She brought home a package of big thick pork steaks.  Painted them with a mixture of soy sauce, ginger and garlic powder.  Sprinkled on some different seasonings.  Gonna give them a ride on the cast iron on my grill.  Maybe for Father's day I will get myself a blackstone so I can have enough room for some veggies too.  Gonna have one of my favorite squash for a side, butternut!  Hopefully get a pick.of them before I eat them, sometimes o forget.  As an aside my wife made her meatloaf last night, always good but I like the leftover meat loaf the best.  Heated a slice of it for breakfast, put some marinara sauce on it, and then a couple soft fried runny eggs on top.  Even the dog that got to lick the plate thought it was good.

We'll didn't get a pic of the sides but the or steaks came out just right, tender, juicy not over cooked, side of butternut squash and spring salad in a box with Bleu cheese dressing. Wife also picked up a marie calendars frozen key lime pie, one of my favorites.  One of these days my cold frame is gonna be kicking out greens, I am craving a wilted salad.

One of the rare good food things my mother did was a bacon fat wilted salad with bleu cheese crumbles. I will need to do that soon.

Grilled head of romaine drizzled in olive oil sprinkled with blue cheese and bacon crumbles.  Mmmm.
