RPS.   I agree, the perfect storm.  But looks like they ate it.  Burrito, nachos, juice, black bean and corn salad and chocolate milk.  I would have been in heaven.

I agree, the meal could be very good. Nachos made from real cheese sauce with seasoned meat over the top. A black bean and corn recipe where someone bothers to drain and rinse the beans before adding olive oil and salt and lemon. Canned fruit instead of the juice substitute. In other words, someone who cares plus a few pennies per plate would make a world of difference.

Unfortunately, something like 70 to 80 percent of my kids are on free and reduced lunch status and the meals at school are critical to them.

70 to 80 percent free lunch in a bright red, glowing red, state where nobody sponges off the government because we are to proud, get a better job, get a second job, stop working fast food at minimum wage, staunch conservatives and all of the bs rhetoric.

I'll stop here.

Let's take this thread off track, ok?

Last Friday I took pictures of the lunch served to the poor students in my school.

The new food director does not know how to supervise a kitchen, the school board refuses to write a budget to supplement the dollars received from the feds and state, and the salt and grain and fat restrictions are ridiculous. The perfect storm, eh?

Where's the John Marzetti, sloppy Joe's, shepherd's pie, spaghetti red, gelatin jewels, canned spinach?

Our school is 100% free lunches, no one has an option to pay.  Some of us asked about paying and the school said no.   I for one believe the the federal level should be concerned with assisting states getting funding, grants etc. and not trying to dictate what a school serves.  Let the school employees do their job, and if the quality isn't there the school board takes the superintendent to task.  Several of the local churches work toh ether to provide backpacks with simple meals in them for students to take home over the wekends.  Small town stuff, no clue how things work in a bigger district.

Fish stick fridays! The best was the lemon, grape or orange juice bars they used to have. The BilletHead is old and that was a long time ago. Bet the lunch ladies still look the same,

Gf is a teacher in Independence, MO and her school is 75% free/ reduced. She told me her principal ran into a student outside school and asked him if he was ready for summer. Kid said no -- that just means I'll be hungry.

It's never the kid's fault. There is real need out there. But I worry we perpetuate the problem if we give too freely from too far away from home. Who wouldn't take free food if offered from a nameless, faceless benefactor who has money to burn?

Meanwhile, I'm stuffed. Chicken breasts stuffed with chilies and seasoned with some spices, done on the Weber. Rice and corn and chips and guac and beer. All prepared by other people. Nice!

Since it was mothers day, my wife chose steak on he grill with friends.  So 6 Tbones gave it their all on grill, a little salt, pepper grlic powder combo and some heat.  Sweet potatoes in the microwave, and corn on the cob.  Salad in a bag to go with.  Dessert, vanilla ice cream with some strawberries that a couple hours earlier were happily soaking up the may sunshine.  Twas a good day.  Oh and then had to make another batch of strawberry freezer jam with the rest of the berries.

Man, I love freezer jam. Keeps so much of the fruit flavor done that way.

My wife is a kindergarten teacher up in that area (Fort Osage). About half their school serves a government subsidized housing project and about the same percentage is on Free and Reduced.

Pretty amazing some of the stories that I hear from there.
