Ham
So my Cougar going 72 MPH at WOT isn't doing too bad ? I'm running a Fury 26 pitch and my analog Tach is saying 5800 ish. I'm usually running at 45-50 mph and the boat is a lot more stable at 70 mph, but I have seen a GPS 72.something, Lots of folks saying upper 70's etc for that boat and motor, but that's what I have seen. mixermarkb
Ham- the slip calculator shows your theoretical max at 82, and 12 percent slip at 72mph gps, using 26 for the prop pitch and adding nothing for any cup. That's not too bad, but there is probably some room in those numbers for improvement. Maybe a jack plate adjustment up or down a little, playing with where the load is in the storage compartments, or a little prop blueprinting. I'd say 74-76 is a pretty attainable speed for your rig, much above that is likely a BS number with an empty boat and a splash of gas.
Ham
I really don't think I'm going to tweek anything. I'm good with my hole shot and happy with the fuel consumption on an average days running. We fished 5 days at Toledo Bend and because we trailered close onl used 11 gallons all together. However, most of my trips I use more like 5-8 gallons of gasoline. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. mixermarkb
Yep. It's all not about top end. 72 is plenty, and even with the cheaper gas right now, it's still expensive to mash the ol hotfoot down all day. I haven't converted to all Ned fishing yet, so I still like to have a few bucks for a megabass from time to time.. Champ188
Champ188
Blows my mind how some of these guys afford to fish the way they drive their boats. I wonder if maybe they saved a bunch of money by not buying a throttle assembly. All some of them need is an ignition switch since they run wide open at all times and under all circumstances. My biggest problem is keeping the carbon blown out of mine since I putter around at 3500-4000 most of the time. Chunk Rock and Ham

Maybe a little hammer down for a mile or so on the last run back in just for kicks.
mixermarkb
Yeah, it is fun to open it up right before sunset, and it's nice to have some speed when you are running around storm cells in the spring. I used to be a WFO or stop guy, but I can't afford that anymore.

I used to be a WFO or stop guy, but I can't afford that anymore. I'm with you. I enjoy a nice wide-open run back to the ramp at day's end and doing that seems to alleviate carbon problems. But these guys that are hammer down 24/7, 365 --- including on 34-degree weekdays with freezing rain when they can't possibly be fishing a tournament --- are just comical to me. I'm like Alex ... I don't even run everywhere wide open in a tournament. Making a leisurely 3/4 throttle run between spots and visiting with my co-angler helps keep me relaxed and fishing a lot better than if I'm running and gunning and wired out of my mind. Members marimac1944
Based on Bills number I may have been a couple of mph more. surprised me, two chubby 150# old farts with some baggage and absolutely no fish. One time 10 second run wide open, shut down and trimmed down, usually run 50-55 mph locally, traffic is getting worse ever year. Came around pt. 10 about 9:30 am and three ski boats abreast coming at me and two in line coming out of Little Aunts. Shut down and headed shallow and bounced around from the wakes. Abreast in Aunts creek. Yikes!!!!
