Terrierman Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 Another tomato that I've had good success with here in SWMO is Super Fantastic. Glad to see all the love for the Cherokee Purple, those ugly tomatoes are about my favorite too. A similar heirloom type is Black Prince so if you see any of those go ahead. I think it's always a good idea to have some variety. This year I went back to an old standby and planted some Better Boys, and two types that are new to me, Celebrity and Fourth of July. And of course Cherokee Purple.
ness Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 My raspberries and gooseberries are about on par with yours BH. That's because they don't depend on me. BilletHead 1 John
ness Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 Celebrity is a great tomato. Disease resistant, good flavor, medium-sized fruit. I plant them every year. Terrierman 1 John
Johnsfolly Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 JD the snake is 3 to 3.5 feet in length. So it is certainly an adult. Do kingsnakes eat moles? we used to have a fair number of them and at least one in the raised beds, but no more. In regards to feral cats, I caught 25 cats in 18 months and only 4 were pets.
jdmidwest Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 I am sure they will, might have a hard time getting their feet down their neck though. One that big would be catching mice, lizards, birds, or young rabbits. I caught mine young, and let it go when it got to about 2 feet. That's alot of cats. They breed pretty fast too. They probably go after the moles too if they are that thick. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
ness Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Here's about a weeks worth of asparagus, and this morning's radishes and lettuce. French Breakfast radishes (my favorite), Red Salad Bowl and Slo-Bolt lettuce. I'd better get to munching on this stuff -- CSA pickup day is Monday. BilletHead and Terrierman 2 John
jdmidwest Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 Picked our first Strawberries today, just a handful. Many quarts to come soon. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
BilletHead Posted May 15, 2015 Author Posted May 15, 2015 Pulled the remaining lettuce this morning. Worked up nine gallon bags of nice leaves. Will have to spread the good fortune in the morning. Also yanked the broccoli. The stuff just did not make and what did were dollar sized heads. Do not know what went wrong but may not mess with it in the future. So what to do with the empty bed? Purchased a couple of zucchini plants. A black beauty and a golden. Two more pepper plants also. Cubanelles, we did not start any of them this time but really like this variety, Found first tomato and pepper of our season too, Also got nailed on the ear by a red wasp. Have never had then this aggressive this time of the year. Normally during the fall they get very mean and go to dive bombing when you get close. They are in the corner outside eve of the metal garage. High up. I watched them after todays attack. There are two guards that just watch as I go by. Kept my distance and will be getting one of those long distance spray cans and take them out. ness Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 Funny, I was just thinking about this today. I end up with empty spots after the lettuce, marriages and spinach are done. Was reading up on bush beans and it talked about succession plantings up into July. Why didn't I think of that?? I think I'll follow up with more bush beans -- they're one of my favorites. By the way, marriages = radishes. I saw that correction, but had to let it stand. What the heck?? John
