As I was putting together the fishing report this morning my reminder notice on the calendar went off reminding me to go through the first aid kit. I do this twice a year to ensure all the contents are current and not expired as well as open 1 package of everything else (band-aid, alcohol swabs etc) to make sure they are still good.

I thought it would be a good time to discuss things we should all have in the boat, I get a little more carried away then some do but having been around fishing, hunting and construction all my life I have seen enough to be that way.

I always carry the following in my first aid kit.

  1. Scissors
  2. Hemostats
  3. Tweezers
  4. Razor Blades
  5. Needle
  6. Thread
  7. Cu-tips
  8. Knife
  9. Sterile Gloves
  10. Tape
  11. Ace Bandage
  12. Tongue depressors ( for splints on fingers )
  13. Epi-pin
  14. Sterile rubber tube
  15. Asprin
  16. Non-asprin
  17. Burn cream
  18. Bite cream
  19. Alcohol and alcohol wipes
  20. Peroxide
  21. Iodine
  22. Neosporin
  23. Gauze
  24. Cotton Balls
  25. Bandages of many different sizes
  26. CPR and First Aid manual
  27. Blood Clouting packs
  28. Tums
  29. Sharpie
  30. Ice packs ( type you shake to activate )
  31. Hot Hands
  32. Super Glue

So what do you carry in your kits?

A bottle opener.

I have never forgotten these wise words:

Once ... in the wilds of Afghanistan, I lost my corkscrew, and we were
forced to live on nothing but food and water for days.

Hemostats, wire cutters, a few band aids, swabs, medical tape, vinyl gloves. Just the basics to treat fin cuts or a hook incident.

good itmes, but what about the snake bite kit, for when those water snakes fall in the boat from a tree when getting your lure unstuck?

You have a large kit I dont know if all that will fit in my boat. Peroxide is at the top of my list along with ibupropen, band aids. We had an incident during a walleye tourney involving my partner being impaled by a fin of a channel cat. It took a great deal of time removing and peroxide to clean it out wasn"t on board. He took a few ibuprofen and the pain subsided we cleaned it out back on land and he was fine but I carry peroxide on board now.

A small package of Imodium A-D is always in all my kits, I never needed it but sure would be hard to get the boat in and home if I did need it.

That's a great reminder; I need to check mine out to see what is in there.

I would also add some strong line or cord for hook removal. Ten-pound test fluorocarbon isn't going to cut it.

Thanks for making a Red Cross post on Friday 13th!

Dam near cut my finger off today. Hope that sucker heals fast because my right hand is now worthless for fishing.

All mine fits in a Tackle Box, I wont go out without it and I have plenty of TP on the boat and Me and Bears understand what the woods are for lol

Can't leave home without it.
