bfishn Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 Everything I've read says no. Guess I shouldn't have eaten all the ones I did before reading up. They're (IMO) better tasting than morels with a lot more "on the plate" yield than too. Found 18lbs in one spot once and served them with a fish fry to over a dozen friends... no problems for anyone. Ate lots more other times too. I can't dance like I used to.

BilletHead Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 And the Moral of the story is I won't eat them. Have had a couple of friends who ate them for years until just one time they made them really ill. Experts say that the toxin will build up until you decide to get sick. Then again we have another friend who got sick on morels once and will not eat them to this day but will still eat the red/false morels. Then again , again we have a 87 year old widower neighbor. He eats them, congestive heart failure, cancers cut off his face. shuffles now when he walks. He told me the other day when I went by to check on him to be looking for him some reds. He cannot go out to find them now. He is also beginning to smell like old man. I wish he would bathe. This is another reason I'm not going to eat any! A nice old fellow and a friend. Just need to stay up wind now, Go figure? fishinwrench Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 I knew they weren't real morals, but I found a place where there are a BUNCH of them so I figured I'd ask before picking more. I think I'll pass. This is no time to be feeling I'll. Thanks.
jdmidwest Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 I heard several reports that the reds are up. I went out today at the farm for a while, Mayapples are just poking up thru the ground under the leaves. Danderlions are starting to show. But no mushrooms. Another week at least. fishinwrench Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Do you eat reds, JD ? They look delicious.....but I'm skeert
bfishn Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 The false reds I've eaten were easily the best mushrooms I've ever had. Sliced like a thick garden 'mater, breaded and deep fried. Get a really big one, and a single slice is like eatin' a freakin' sandwich. Great platform for experimenting with hot sauce. Disclaimer; I ate false morels for years simply because people I knew did. Nobody ever told me they could be bad, they were just a bonus to morel hunting. Now that I've learned better (???) I'm not sure I'd ever eat 'em again. Probably move 'em to the same category as motorcycles and fast women... worth the ride if you survive. I can't dance like I used to.
fishinwrench Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 "worth the ride if you survive". That's what they used to say about 4-way blotter. trythisonemv 1
