Quillback Posted March 31, 2015 Author Posted March 31, 2015 Congrats on the great day. It was a magnificently perfect spring day yesterday. Between work in the AM and the non-fisher-people company we have down, I was forced to observe the lake all day from the house and could only wonder "what if". Is the meanmouth a smallie-spot cross? Cool looking fish. As I understand things, they are a smallie/spot cross as you mention.
Champ188 Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Is the meanmouth a smallie-spot cross? Cool looking fish. Indeed and they are aptly named. They seem to be inherently PO'd about life in general. Sac River Jim 1
LD Fisher Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Is there a foolproof way to identify a Meanmouth other than they don't really look like a spot or a smallmouth???
dtrs5kprs Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Is there a foolproof way to identify a Meanmouth other than they don't really look like a spot or a smallmouth??? That is pretty much it. Usually they are kind of a weird gold with the stripe as in Quill's pic, and the little Kentucky mouth. Once in a while I catch one that looks more like a green smallmouth, same little head and mouth, and usually a tongue patch. Guess it comes down to which DNA was stronger. Originally it was a lab cross of spots and blacks. Apparently that does not happen naturally. Champ188 1
LD Fisher Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 That's what I thought........just wondered if I was missing something. Thanks!
*T* Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 So: Spot/Smallmouth = Meanmouth Spot/Largemouth = doesn't happen? Smallmouth/Largemouth = doesn't happen? Meanmouths I've seen sometimes vary in appearance from one to another, maybe that's typical though as one LM to another may vary in appearance. What about (M)Spot/(F)Smallmouth vs. (F)Spot/(M)Smallmouth. Sorry, just curious. Fish biologists, please step up. "Water is the driving force of all Nature."Â -Leonardo da Vinci
Fish24/7 Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Tuesday I saw a 4lb 4 oz mean mouth caught out of Bull Shoals. you'll be happy to know they let it go Ham and Champ188 2
Champ188 Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 On rare occasion, SM and LM will cross-breed naturally. I caught one about 3.5 pounds several years back. Took a bunch of photos and sent them to MDC and they confirmed it was a SM/LM cross and thanked me profusely for sending the pics. I was impressed by their gratitude since it was me wanting the fish ID confirmed.
bluebasser86 Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 What do you guys think on this one? I caught it on Table Rock a couple years ago around Aunt's Creek. The mouth seemed much smaller than an average largemouth, the coloration was a little different, and it had the bars on the cheeks. I didn't really think anything of it at the time but when I looked at the picture later it kind of made me wonder if it was possibly a hybrid.
Quillback Posted April 2, 2015 Author Posted April 2, 2015 Looks like it has the coloration of a LM, but has that diamond like pattern of a spot.
