Members Genome Posted April 18, 2015 Members Posted April 18, 2015 I'm one of the said researchers from missouri state that did cottonmouth research at crane. There is a good population there. There is also an even better population of northern water snakes. Watersnakes are a mimic of cottonmouths and most people will mistake the two. I collected cottonmouths from crane and every state they inhabit for genetic research. I wish cottonmouths chased people, would have made my job much easier! If you've ever gotten the impression a snake is charging/chasing you it was because you were between the snake and the spot it wanted to retreat to (to get away from you). Please leave the snakes alone. Buzz 1
Gavin Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 Snakes dont pose much risk unless you want to pick one up. A buddies niece got hit by a copperhead on her leg down at Red Bluff on the Huzz a couple years ago but that's it.
jdmidwest Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 I have handled more snakes than most normal people. But I make it a point to "IDENTIFY" first. Dad used to get the heebe jeebies when I let the speckled king snakes crawl all over my arms. They have to be the most docile of MO snakes. Next would be the green snakes. I have never made friends with any garter snake. Many rats snakes can be handled after a little work. Common water snakes can be biters for no reason. Ring neck snakes don't really count, they are more like earth worms. Spread heads have a temper, but I have only seen one in the last 20 years. Never caught a blue racer, but have heard many buzz like a rattler, they glide with a movement unriveled by any other. I have only came across one red milk snake, but red and black, no venom. No Coral Snakes in MO, have to wait for global warming to bring them in. I have made friend with many fence lizards, but never cared for the skinks. I chased a collarded lizard for a while, but he was a better sprinter. I have a zero tolerence for poison snakes. Sorry, but that is life. If you want a cottonmouth for your collection, I can take you to a cove in Wappappello lake, Lake Girardeau, or several southern Ozarks streams where they will come right up to you in a boat. If you retreat, they will follow. Water snakes will dive, Cottonmouths will float on top. I have always considered it as they are looking for the higher ground on a boat. BilletHead Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 You know I have never met a snake I did not like. Now people are a different story as they show their true colors pretty quick. I too have messed with snakes. Venomous and non. Caught and handled copperhead and cottonmouth. Both times it was like why in the heck did I do this. It did produce a rush though. Had a rosy boa as a teenager. I have decided you JD and feathers and fins should get together become friends . We would give you the titles of the official Ozarks Anglers Snake Wranglers. Go to schools etc. and educate the public about the benefits of snakes. Again snakes here in the states only become aggressive if provoked and again people can be aggressive just because they can. So for the most part I trust a snake, BilletHead "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" So for the most part I trust a snake, BilletHead I have done that Marty, it was fun for a while but with regulations and the worry of being sued if someone is bit even by a harmless snake it is not worth it anymore. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
trythisonemv Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 Lots of snakes today but no cottonmouths. Just brown water snakes. All went away from me.
