I have a Minn Kota battery charger and I'm always a little worried about leaving it plugged in all the time. Do you guys leave yours plugged in or unplug after batteries are charged? I always have the thought of Chris Lane's boat catching fire in the back of my mind. I have my boat in a garage that is connected to my house and always worry about burning the house down. Thoughts? Thanks for your answers .

I charge my batteries immediately upon returning. I have a master switch that disconnects the batteries from everything except the battery charger to prevent battery drain. I plug the charger back in the night before a trip just to make sure.

I do not and will not leave my batteries on charge all the time.

I also charge as soon as we get back from the lake. If its been more than a week since we last went out, i will put charger back on before we go out to top it off. I have left it on overnight when i fell asleep on the couch on several occasions, but i try not to make it a habit.

I actually only leave it plugged in to charge while I'm home and awake.

So usually on the weekends if I'm home, I'll plug the charger in and make sure they're topped off. If I leave or am going to bed, I unplug it.

Im with Ham, Master Kill on my batteries and its off as soon as the boats off the water and on only at the ramp. Charger I have a nice one I bought that has an automatic off when charged. I trust it far more than my factory installed onboard 2 bank. I charge the Fishfinder battery first then the trolling motor battery.

  1. i leave my 2 bank on board charger plugged in all the time although I check on it frequently. i use a regular charger on my starting battery just to top off but do not leave it plugged in after a full charge. im paranoid about getting to the ramp and having a dead starting battery.

You can use jumper cables in a boat and jump off of your trolling motor batteries in a pinch.
