msamatt Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 Guys, Jennifer Girondo and other members of the MDC's Smallmouth Bass Management Team will join us in St. Louis on Tuesday, May 19th from 7-9 pm at The American Legion Goff-Moll Post 101 located at 2721 Collier Ave, Brentwood, MO 63144. Collier is just West of the Schnuck's grocery store located at the corner of Brentwood and Manchester. Ms. Girondo will present highlights of their studies' results, the managment implications of those studies, and the background information they are using to craft regulation recommendations. They will also let us know about opportunity for more public input expected this fall. Please don't miss the great opportunity to learn more about what the MDC is doing to manage our Smallmouth Bass fisheries and what we can continue to do to help with those processes. If you're reading this forum we assume you're interested in the health and future of our smallmouth fisheries. You don't have to be an MSA member (though what's stopping you ) to attend this meeting. If you can't make the meeting but would like for us to ask a question on your behalf please send an email to us at missourismallmouthalliance@gmail.com You can find more details about the location of this meeting at www.missourismallmouthalliance.org Hope to see you on Tuesday. Jerry Rapp Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 down here in the Valley, no one can go to the top of Pilot Knob. Pilot Knob is a mountain top shot off in the civil war. Why can't anyone go up there, besides a fence? Someone might have saw an endangered bat near the top of it some time ago. ????? But yet right across Highway 21, there is a hiking trail to the top of Shepard Mountain. MDC does some weird and unexplainable stuff. If Pilot Knob Mtn would be developed into an open area with a good hiking trail, it would bring a bunch more tourism to this little Valley. I know this has nothing to do with MSA, but just wanted to point out that MDC does some unexplainable stuff at times. awhuber 1
awhuber Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 I hear my MDC fishery dude (Nick Gironodo) on the radio every Month telling me that there are plenty of smb and the current limits do not affect the populations.

I know this has nothing to do with MSA, but just wanted to point out that MDC does some unexplainable stuff at times.Pilot Knob is part of the Missouri State Parks, not MDC land. At any rate, as I understand it, the endangered Indian bats that are supposed to live up there are under the protection of the federal government (Endangered Species Act), not state. I have my doubts, too, because I live right across the street from it and have watched in the evening with binoculars and have never seen a bat.
Al Agnew Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 Actually Pilot Knob is owned by the federal government, (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service), 90 acres covering the top of the mountain having been donated to them by the last ore company who owned it. It is a wildlife refuge, operated by the administration of Mingo National Wildlife Refuge, and indeed consists of a number of old mine shafts where Indiana bats have been found. Even if the bats weren't endangered, almost all publicly owned caves and mines are locked up these days because of the white nose disease running rampant through various species of bats. The top of the mountain was not blown out in the Battle of Fort Davidson, but was hollowed out by early mining. I don't know why they don't just gate up the entrances to the mine shafts instead of keeping people completely off the mountain...maybe because it's too much trouble to have to take care of the gates, maybe because then entrances are not easy to gate. At any rate, there are always reasons for the feds (or MDC, or DNR, or whoever is taking care of public lands) to do the things they do. They might not be good reasons, but I wish people would take the time to learn who is really doing it and why before complaining about some government entity doing something stupid.
Jerry Rapp Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 I did not that guys, me bad. You drive around the base of Pilot Knob and all you see are State Park signs. Arcadia Valley needs all the tourism dollars it can get, and opening up Pilot Knob mountain for hiking and exploring would help the area, especially being such a historic civil war site. Jeff Tief 1
