I know a lot about MT but its all dated mid-80's when it was really good. Bass/Crappie/Walleye fishing was off the charts.

Something happened about 1988-89 and from what I can tell it's been nothing but a catfish hole ever since.

I haven't heard a good report from up there in YEARS.

I went with some friends last fall and most of them did all right. Not a whole lot of Crappie or huge sizes, but they were biting near brush. I finally started catching something towards the last few hours there, but it wasn't much. For us it was pretty much just Crappie, mid to small ones, and nothing else. We even set trot lines and such in hopes of a huge catfish but nothing hit. They had actually gone that spring and didn't catch much until the very last day themselves, but once they did it was big Crappie one cast after the other. It is a pretty lake though, and I'm hoping to go back again sometime this year. I have read that this year the sizes of Crappie are not as good as years past.

Truman and Mark Twain are the two best crappie lakes in Missouri. Average size this spring has been pretty good. You generally can limit out with 11 to 12 inch fish with an occasional 13 to 14 inch fish. I might mention that crappie fishing techniques vary greatly in Missouri. Mark Twain is centered on jigging by standing timber and in between the logjams in the back of the cutbacks. LOZ anglers spend their days shooting docks and looking for man made brush piles. Fishermen on the clear water lakes of the white river chain often rely on electronics and the rare but precious underwater brush.

Anglers familiar with one particular style and habitat will often struggle when they target a different lake.

Ha :) That's just what you hear about all the time, but those tactics only work 20% of the time.

I actually was raised on MT and the Salt river and its tribs.

It was an outstanding fishery, limits of 3-6lb.bass were normal and excellent crappie everywhere.....and then it just went sour.

What do the highly paid biologists have to say about Mark Twain ?

Surely they have a theory.

highly paid? Lost me on that one....bachelors level biology degree = 15$/hr Id say if they were in it for the money they would have picked something besides science.

So you know what they earn, but not what they have to say about the steadily declining angler success rate at MT ?

BTW, You forgot to add in a fresh vehicle every other year and fuel/maintenance card with no limit, plus many other perks. They do way better than you make it sound.

I was up there may 10 figured I would smash the crappie but nada, switched to the green fish had 7 keepers on a beaver and sq bill bite. Nothing big best 5 would go 13.5.caught 15 total for the day.Fished Indian and pigeon roost areas, water looked great for twain. Have not been back plan on going up in a couple weeks after I finish my paver patio.
