Wrench, you nailed it dead on! If police officers and other 'official' types can text and drive, and they claim they are highly trained, why can't I get that training? Why not make that training part of everyones' driving program. After all, it can't be that hard.

That said...I text and drive. I read the paper on my phone and drive. I eat. I play with the radio. I haven't had an accident in over 20 years. It can be done. It requires intelligence and thinking ahead. It also requires being alert and knowing when to put it down. I'm sorry if some people can't do that. However, I'll thank those who want to jam phones, pass laws, and otherwise tell me what I should or shouldn't be allowed to do in my vehicle to leave me alone.

Maybe one day I'll be able to emigrate to that mythical land called America.....you know....land of the FREE!!!

couple of comments. yep, all those included law enforcement that are texting or holding a phone to their ear while driving is at that point being a bad driver.

comment number two is for the parents. why do you allow your children that are driving to get into a car with a phone??? at least, check their phone to see when their activity is, and if they have been on the phone when you know they are driving, take it away. sometimes being a parent you have to be a parent and not a friend. and, as a parent it is up to you to set the example to follow. are you on the phone and driving???

one last point for boaters. the lake is very busy right now. when fishermen are underway, and are dinging and pinging on their electronics, your eyes are not on the waterway. dinging and pinging on your electronics is just the same as texting. think about it.

That's falls back on the number one reason that I gave them a phone in the first place. To call me if they have an emergency or need anything. That's why I pay the bill.

If you don't raise idiots then you really have nothing to worry about. I don't have to check their phones all the time. I know they aren't doing it. They stand to lose a lot if I catch them doing it and they understand the dangers of it as well.

It's not hard to raise smart kids. You have to be willing to be a parent though.

I don't know if they are great or not but they are scared to death to get caught texting and driving.

Week before last the oldest caught a curb and blew out the sidewall on a tire. The others were close to needing new so we did all four.

Last week the middle one had to go to court for her speeding ticket. Well I guess she didn't have to go but we wanted it to stay off her record for insurance purposes.

And I still have one 5 years away from a drivers license.

And yes I know that sometimes you can do everything and they still make a mistake. Hell I am the poster child of that. But I'm doing all that I can to give them the support they need to make the right decision. I'd much rather have a good kid that made a mistake than just creating another pimple-on-the-butt-of-society.
