Members jackdizo Posted August 16, 2015 Members Posted August 16, 2015 TFO rods and reels are great for the price. I have a buddy whom purchased one of their setups from BP, and has not been disappointed. But as mentioned above, I would spend a little extra in the rod department and line if capable. Im a big fan of the Scientific Anglers line for the price. Rio is also quality product. I would buy consider something in the 6wt 9ft range if your ever planning on chasing some bigger bass, carp, or even gar in the future, which believe me, you most likely will. Plus, like said above, it makes a world of difference when chucking bigger flies! Get ready to become obsessed. It changed my entire perspective on fishing when I got my first setup. Let us know what you end up getting!
Members Wornica Posted August 16, 2015 Members Posted August 16, 2015 I would buy a bigger rod first to use to learn your casting technique. Then go to your 7 ft glass rod as you will be able to handle it much better than if you only started on the smaller rod.
fishinwrench Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 You already have the Heddon....so use it or sell it TO ME!
netboy Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 Check on Ebay. They have some great deals on the entry level Ross Essences and the Redington Crosswaters lines I picked up a new Ross Essence 5wt for $50 last winter. For a decent beginner reel check out the CNC reels on Ebay. Yeah they are made in China, but a pretty decent reel for about $25. They are anodized aluminum and much better than the plastic stuff that BassPro sells in that price range.
Smallie Seeker Posted September 2, 2015 Author Posted September 2, 2015 Ended up getting the Cabela's RLS+ combo 5 wt 4 pc. Got to spend the weekend at Montauk trying it out and I did pretty well. Definitely need to upgrade from the line it came spooled with. Thinking Rio Gold or SA GPX. But I was more than impressed with the rod/reel. Caught good numbers drifting a nymp/egg dropper set up. I do get the appeal of being able to give such a natural presentation with a fly rod. Its all about the drift. But coming from a gear fishing background its still quite foreign to not have a feel in my hand of whats going on at the other end of the line. Saturday I spent time fishing both spinning and the fly rod. Sunday the spinning rod never came out of the truck. marcus 1
Fishingmill Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Rio gold. You won't be disappointed. It's a pretty good all around fly line for trout. Although there are some other companies that have come out with cool lines lately. trythisonemv 1 instagram.com/fishingmill twitter.com/Fishingmill vimeo.com/fishingmill

joeD Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 How many nice fish have you caught on spinning gear or a baitcaster? How many times did you take a picture of that fish with a purposefully framed tableau of your fish next to your baitcaster , artfully arranged on a bed of greens? Yeah, well, you have fly fishermens disease now. I'm sure music and nature vistas on your next "movie" will follow, with random shots of "ironic" beer (Stag! I drink it all the time!) Just kidding. Good for you, catching fish and learning something new. Well done. David Unnerstall, Fishingmill, BilletHead and 1 other 4
