Jason R. Posted October 19, 2015 Author Posted October 19, 2015 Thats good to hear Wrench. I am pretty good at deals though... But after work I'm going to figure it out. I didn't even realize that the lower cowling can just be taken off real quick. Never had a Merc before. At least it starts- my last motor- a Suzuki 40/30- stranded me mid-Arkansas River- while trying to sell it to a guy. That sucked. Had to paddle back. He did not buy the boat. Jason R. Posted October 20, 2015 Author Posted October 20, 2015 I am hoping this is the only problem. This little rubber thingy is cracked. http://flyinthesouth.com/
Members stlfishin Posted October 20, 2015 Members Posted October 20, 2015 Believe that's your water tube and it may very well be spraying enough to cause water to come out your lower cowling. Take the opportunity to buy a complete water pump kit and replace the water tube, cup, impeller, woodruff key & gaskets. Then run the motor in a tub not on the muffs and and see if the leaking stops. Easy fix and it's something that should be a part of your preventive maintenance on the motor. I suggest you don't run it until you do the water pump kit, your surely getting minimum flow to your water jackets for cooling; overheating is highly probable and happens quickly.
fishinwrench Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 That grommet is not supposed to be there. Someone has done some funny business there. LOL There is supposed to be a collet that goes OVER the water pump housing outlet. Somebody lost the collet and jerry-rigged it. That's funny.
fishinwrench Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Just looked it up. Mercury wants 159.99 for it IF you can find someone who has one. They are NLA from Merc. That's probably why someone took the low road. Good ol' Mercury Marine. Typical
fishinwrench Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Oh, there is also a procedure for the reverse lock when the gearcase is removed/replaced on those models. Did you follow the procedure or just remove the bolts and drop the lower unit ? If you didn't capture the washer on the shift link you are not going to have reverse lock and the shift rod will bind up when you re-install the lower unit. It's kinda tricky.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Can I say it again? Doesn't this always happen with boats? Pete
Jason R. Posted October 20, 2015 Author Posted October 20, 2015 Hey Wrench, I'm looking at this diagram on boats.net. It looks like that piece is #27- part# 85090001. Am I wrong? I honestly don't think the guy before me would jerry rig anything- just did not seem capable. I am for sure going to redo the impeller and gaskets and all that. Water pump was full of wasps and crap and the impeller looked a little worn. Here is the serial number plate. I could be looking at the wrong diagram. http://flyinthesouth.com/
Jason R. Posted October 20, 2015 Author Posted October 20, 2015 OH and luckily I did go through the procedure and kept up with that washer. Thanks youtube. BilletHead, fishinwrench and Deadstream 3 http://flyinthesouth.com/
fishinwrench Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Ahh, yep you are right. Lucky you! I was looking at the wrong list. Not sure why it would be different depending on shaft length but apparently it is.
