gitnby Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Caught this one today on a Mini-Crusader. Pretty fish, and gave me a nice fight, but what's up with the black lips? Don't recall seeing that before?
Champ188 Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 I've caught them like that on occasion. I believe it's a pigmentation thing. Hammer time 1
Members capndan Posted November 9, 2015 Members Posted November 9, 2015 A university of Pennsylvania study in the 90s published that it is just pigmentation that some bass carry.
bfishn Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Hyperpigmented melanosis (sounds worse than it is). I can't dance like I used to.
Jerry Rapp Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 I believe it was caused by eating Zebra Mussels. Give me a million dollars to start research on it and I will give you a proposal to continue the study. Seriously, I have caught many bass over the years with black blotches on them. Lips, backs, sides, tail......... Champ188, shark bait, Hammer time and 1 other 4

Every lake that has them, the fishing has gotten noticeably better since they were found, especially for SMB. They're a huge pain to deal with because their shells are extremely sharp (I call them razor clams), and they clear the water up so much. I don't want them in the lakes I fish, but they certainly haven't been the huge detriment to the fisheries they were touted to be as of yet. dtrs5kprs and Champ188 2

If not now, it's just a matter of time. Champ188 1
dtrs5kprs Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Zebras seem to be great for the brown fish wherever they are found. Get ready for the full scale brown fish take over.
