Caught this one today on a Mini-Crusader. Pretty fish, and gave me a nice fight, but what's up with the black lips?

Don't recall seeing that before?

Hyperpigmented melanosis (sounds worse than it is).

I can't dance like I used to.

I believe it was caused by eating Zebra Mussels.  Give me a million dollars to start research on it and I will give you a proposal to continue the study.  Seriously, I have caught many bass over the years with black blotches on them.  Lips, backs, sides, tail.........

speaking of zebra mussels, i am pretty sure i brought one in saturday.  i really don't think we want them in the lake, but i do not know if there is any way to get rid of them once here.

They're in several lakes near me in NE KS. Every lake that has them, the fishing has gotten noticeably better since they were found, especially for SMB. They're a huge pain to deal with because their shells are extremely sharp (I call them razor clams), and they clear the water up so much. I don't want them in the lakes I fish, but they certainly haven't been the huge detriment to the fisheries they were touted to be as of yet.

It would not surprise me if they are in the lake.  If not now, it's just a matter of time.
