I use 1/2 and 3/4 quite a bit just because I can stay connected to them in deep and rough water. I just see no need for lightweight football shaped heads I guess unless they are very lightly dressed (no skirt, just a craw or finesse worm). I doubt we are fishing nearly as deep in the rivers as you are in the lake. The deepest hole I fish during the winter is 15' deep. The football head is just handy because it keeps the hook point riding up and is nice when you're slowly dragging across the bottom. Hog Wally and Mitch f 2
fishinwrench Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 I really don't have a problem with my jigs laying over on their side but I hear alot of guys fretting about it. Either the line tie orientation or the trailers I use keep my jigs straight. Or at least straight enough. I use footballs for heavy deep jigs but to be honest I'm not sure why. Seems a standard head would do just fine....plus come over brush better.
Old plug Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 I used to do a lot of different things years ago but with time and age I have settled on strait bucktail and plastic trailers. Lot of fun to make a lot of concoctions , but I will do ok with what I got. I like bushy jigs. I realize they have such things as a slower drop that is not always conductive to good fishing. But they also have a soft landing that makes them easier to work thru the brush without hang ups. Since wrench told me about rabbit fur awhileI back have been using it at times on my 1/32 and 1/16 oz crappie jigs. i just take. a couple short strips of it and just tie them to the jig hook right I back of the head. Sure is nothing fancy but it does work. Mitch f 1
Al Agnew Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 All I know is, Mitch's football heads get hung up in rocks considerably less than the stand-up and arkie head jigs that I still tie because I had a bunch of jig heads with wire weedguards before Mitch started keeping me supplied with the good stuff. fishinwrench Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 I use Mitch's heads for 5" Chompers on the lake and they are the bomb. I've never tried them on the rivers just cuz I strictly flyfish then, but I'm sure you're right. I trashed the wire guards on several last year so I just cut them off and continued to fish it, it was a long LONG time before I would hang one up even with an exposed hook. MOsmallies and Mitch f 2
Hog Wally Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 I'm with Al, Mitch's heads and craw setup is a step above what I'm used to using. MOsmallies and Mitch f 2
Old plug Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 I like the design with Mitch's the angled edges of his. Jig I believe are what makes it slid over rocks easier. He done a fine job on designing them. As soon as I seen the first one I knew it would be a very fine river jig. Since there going to have a bait company. I would. Like to suggest they call that jig Mama San. Mitch f 1

What size hooks do you use on your 1/8oz football heads Mitch? On the 1/8 oz, I use 2/0 Mustad 32729 BLN jig hooks. Seth 1 "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
