dtrs5kprs Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Tried it. No one had a complete lower in stock. It was May of '06, apparently they were a bit scarce then. It was covered under warranty and Merc would only replace the complete lower. They did not have them ready to ship. None at the lake, none at Cabela's, none at Smithville... After much haggling they finally sent just the drive shaft (and sent the wrong one first-a racing shaft) had that put in, then drove back down once the lower was shipped. This was when Mark was selling Champions in Kimberling. They were actually really good about leaning on Merc for me.
fishinwrench Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 OK so you were depending on warranty service then. I knew there was a catch there somewhere, cuz I can guarantee that in May of 06 there was no shortage of V6 Merc lower units in Missouri and if you could have worked out PAYMENT you could have had one installed within 10 hours. ness 1
dtrs5kprs Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 In fact, I considered buying a spare lower and travelling with it. Plenty of room in the truck.
fishinwrench Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 That gearcase is no different from the previous year(s) models. For 2700.00+/- I could have met you with one and installed it. Jus'sayin. Interested in a spare to carry now ? ness 1

That was back when I still thought it was cool to run all over the lake. Thought the old silver XS lower was a different critter? Tried to buy one outright from several dealers, none had one on hand then.
dtrs5kprs Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Have thought about an aftermarket lower too. A guide friend swapped his Yamaha lower for an aftermarket last year for Less than a grand, and has run the fire out of it.
fishinwrench Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Nope, nothing new and exciting about lower units since the 1980's
