I'm usually brushing on epoxy (Etex lite) Im painting clown on the holographics & pro green or table rock shad on the clears? Any other colors I might want to try on the jerks? thanks orange on top half, red on the bottom half with 6 black spots down each side, and red hooks
abkeenan Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 I bought from Predator YEARS ago and had some LC Pointer KO's and other cranks painted. I ran into the same problem as Quill. Most of mine sank and varied A LOT from blank to blank. Fractions of ounces make a huge difference on suspending jerkbaits and in the end it just wasn't worth the pain in the rump to deal with and I just went back to buying McSticks and other mass produced jerkbaits. Changing hooks, split rings, suspend dots, weight of paint, how many coats of clear coat, etc....nah.....now I'll leave it up to the professionals that do more lab testing than I ever could and get it right to where I can open the pack and fish it. I get it that some take pleasure in tinkering with baits and there is nothing wrong with that. But, now I guess I am getting older and lazier and just want something I can tie on and go to work with minimal tinkering.
Hughesy Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 Sometimes even the professionals with all of their lab testing don't get it right. I, and I'm sure many others here on the forum have bought brand name jerk baits that didn't perform like they where supposed to. I remember when the Mcsticks first came out they had a leaking problem that made them sink. There are no guarantees when it comes to suspending lures. Too many variables. Water temp being a major one. dtrs5kprs and Hammer time 2

Water temp being a major one. Totally agree. Even mass produced baits have variation from one bait to another. But for the most part they are going to be more consistent than buying blanks and shooting them with your own paint. Maybe not you Hughesy because you have been doing it so long but to the average Joe like me it just wasn't worth my time and to have crummy results. I don't get enough time to fish as it is so I don't want to waste precious time fooling around with a bait instead of actually fishing. As far as the McSticks you are correct. Their original runs had issues to where they filled with water and sank like a rock. I had bought a handful of them and about half did that. I sent them back to Spro and they replaced them with new ones plus extras. For that reason I am a big fan of Spro and their customer service. Plus their baits flat out catch fish and come with quality components inculding gammy hooks.
Guest Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 I like tinkering & I like challenges, so this sounds like fun to me I've got more experience swapping hooks & split rings on these jerks. This one time, I decided to clear coat a LC Pointer with D2T epoxy. Well it didn't turn out so good. It sank like a brick at warp speed. When I switched to Etex, it fixed that problem.
m&m Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 Here are a couple of square bill blanks from Predator that my son painted last night. I hope they run straight. He will check them out Friday. Mike Pepe, 176champion, Flysmallie and 2 others 5
moguy1973 Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Nah, those won't catch any. They will catch lots. They really look great. Love that black and chartreuse one... -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Guest Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Your son did a good job, some of that stencil work is difficult to paint.
176champion Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 They look very good...good job!! I know everything about nothing and know nothing about everything! Bruce Philips
