WHARFRAT well done! Glad you finally had one of those days!

Old Plug - That's a beast of a crappie! You get it on one of your homemade roadrunners?

Not sure what your referring too Paul. I caught one the other day about 1/8 inch short of 17" caught on one of those 1/64th oz jigs . I sent or Mitch a pic of a few  made with a ttiny piece of rabbit fur attached to it and a chunk of crappie candy. I caught ironing if those.  I posted a pictur at one time of two I caught on consecutive cast with a rogue that both were between 17and 18 inches. Those were the biggest I ever caught in this lake we might have a lot of crappie here but nothing compares in average size with those come out of the Mississippi in the wintertime below Clarksville, Winfield or in the spring on Kentucky Lk or Wapppello back in the day. I think there are a lot more crappie in the 16" range in LOZ you never hear about.

Big crappie are fun to catch, but they are one species that I would prefer to have a limit of 10-12" versus a few big ones. I'm a meat hunter when it comes to crappie fishing unlike pretty well every other species I target. :)

depending on growth rates too i think the smaller ones eat better.....at least thats what ill tell myself to justify cleaning a bunch of 9 inch fish....haha.

Next time you clean a mess that includes a few big ones take notice of the size of the fillets.   There's not any more meat on a 12 incher than there is on a 10.5 incher, their heads are just bigger.  Once they are fried up you might get 1/2 a bite more meat, if that.

About the only way that I come up with a 16 inch crappie, is to burn the first 3 inches. Used to fish a public dock a few years back and one gentleman from linn creek was always telling me about the big crappie he was catching. On arriving one morning, he says "look in my bucket and see the 18 incher I just caught. It barely touched from one side to other in the bottom of a five gallon bucket. I said " yep thats a good one". Some people have no idea how big a 16 inch, and especially an 18 inch crappie really is.
