fishinwrench Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Al, if you are going to nose hook the trailer AND use a trailer hook, then why not thread the grub on the trailer hook? Just curious.
Members Fly Boy Posted December 19, 2015 Author Members Posted December 19, 2015 Thank you for your helpful replies. I now clearly understand the difference between nosing and threading a grub. I will be using a Shannon imitation with bucktail. Does that skirt go better with a certain method of attaching a grub? I also appreciate the comments on fishing the Twin Spin. I look forward to getting out and giving that lure a try.

Old plug Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Mine looked was different in many ways than that of Als. Only thing that was the same is the shape of the head. I made mine in a single spin mold the wire and eye came out the front about 1 1/4 inches.I turned the up at a 45 degree angle amd bent the wire on the arms in such a way that it would slide down the wire and collapse flat. Then when you wanted to use it you would just push the wire up and it would snap into place. I made it that way for storage. i used them on the upper Meramec I sold some and used some but I have alwys been a jig or worm fisherman. But they must have caught fish becuase i got calls for them. Including enough that it drew the attentin of the state tax people who wanted to know if it was a limited hobby and that it was Als othe end of making them.
Old plug Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 I looked at Als pic before i read his piece and I guess mine is made mostly like his. I do not remember ever using tht wire in front of it. But it seems like a good idea. injust did not use mine that much. Most of mine were 3/8 oz amd 1/2 oz all around larger a bit than a 1/4.

The front wire was new to me as well. I make some on a football head for deep fishing and night fishing. Have a friend who used to fish a twin spin a lot, but not so much the Shannon.
Gavin Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Al's bait design is good and the wire on the front does help. The ones from Jerry's in Highland are good but smaller and lack the front wire. I like the Jerry's Weedless Wonder Triple Spins that they made over there. Glad they are still in biz.

Just curious. You still have the same problem of the plastic wanting to slide down the hook shaft; I tried it that way and not only had that problem but I also just didn't like the way it looked. The free-swinging hook seemed to get torqued a bit by the curly tail would run a little sideways sometimes. However, there are problems nose-hooking it as well--after a while the hole wears a little loose and when you hook a few fish, sooner or later one will shake the grub off the lure. I hate leaving grubs littering the river bottom so I try very hard to retrieve them (some of the ones I buy float, making it easier), but I still lose a few.
