I'm not with the mshp or water patrol. Just had the opportunity to work with a few of the water patrol guys in my day to day activities. I'm just a lowly street officer. ?

As far as the mentality of only calling a cop when you need one and then criticizing them when they are doing their job isn't being proactive in the support of law enforcemnent. As many know I too am a law enforcemnent officer and have been for 12 years. Many times i have taken into consideration a person's current financial situation as it relates to a speeding ticket or other traffic related offenses and not write them. That being said, no one is more "truely" aware of their financial situation than the said offender. So, if they can't afford the risk of getting a summons, then they should especially be aware of their speed or other potential violations and not commit them.  As far as an officer getting involved with your life unless you call them....again i can say that many times officers get involved in your life and you don't even know it because they prevented you from being a victim of a crime by being proactive and patrolling your neighborhood while many are at home sleeping. un be knownst to you, they stopped a burglary in your area or stopped a speeder who was intoxicated. Thus preventing him from killing your loved ones.  a horrible  feelings of law enforcement is responding to a motor vehicle accident involving an intoxicated driver where the innocent one or (someone's loved one) was killed and we didn't get to stop that person before a tragic event occurred. I realize there are a lot of people who are jaded with law enforcement and it truely is a shame. I also realize some Leo's have brought that on themselves.  But please remember for every 1 bad officer there are 100 good ones. I appreciate the support for law enforcement that many give.  I am willing, and have stood in front of harms way for more than one "stranger" because that is the oath i took and is what I swore to do.

I can remember all the dumb things I did as a kid to get in trouble with the police, they were all jerks, all they wanted to do was harrass us, always looking for us just so they could cuff us and throw us in jail, then call are parents and then we are up the creek without a paddle, dishing out fines, community service, probation, loss of driving privileges, everybody was against us, we were terrible kids, they couldn't wait to get us for DWI, or underage drinking, hanging around causing trouble all the time, Then something happened!!! We grew up!! I wouldn't trade those years for anything, glad they are gone and glad I learned from it. I am also lucky I never found my self in a position as one as the young man from Iowa. As I look back I am lucky there were police around, lucky I am around today to realize they actually were doing me a favor back then I was just to young to realize it.

Amen 96 C !!     The things I remember doing and getting away with are embarrassing. Some are unbelievable.  I'm glad we didn't have phones and you tube!

I hated a Statey in Michigan for taking my beer.    When I "grew up" I remembered he took my young drunk butt home, and never gave me the speeding ticket I deserved.   70 Cuda 340.  I miss that car

Most, no ALL of my attitude about LEO's comes from small town officers and overzealous county jackasses that I assume are inflicted with some kind of superiority rush.  I guess it stands to reason that podunk towns/counties end up with the worst of the worst when it comes to lawmen.   It's like the dudes just don't have enough to do and get antsy.   With the exception of the sherrif (who is a really good guy) you can't even get these dickheads to smile and wave around here.  To the cops around here EVERYONE is a potential felon.  You wave and they look at you like you just flipped them off and may just follow you awhile and run your plates.   Seriously I fear the local crackheads less than I fear the law dogs.  They are jerks, for no good reason.

In the town I grew up in the police and county guys were all salt of the earth good people.  The few scraps I had with them were totally deserved, and after I was "straightened out" they went right back to being decent again.   That's the way it should still be.

Yep.    The small town guys are the worst.  The city boys have way to much going on to mess around with BS.   Very rural where I grew up, best deputy sheriff in the world is coming down in a  few weeks for a week of Lilleys Landing fun.  His brothers and boss?   They like to nit pick and bully.

Ha!  "Straightened out"   When I was in the 82nd Airborne I ended up in the county lock up.  I was a badass paratrooper!  The local boys took off the cuffs at my request and we settled our differences. Twice!    Them sons a guns been fighting paras since WWII.  They reminded of that after I was "Straightened Out". Twice.

OK I gotta share my favorite "back in the day" cop story.

Me and a couple buddys were cruising town stoned as hell, we pulled into Hardee's and as we got out a cop who was driving thru stopped to say hi.  Our eyes all looked like two pissholes in the snow and I know we reeked of Columbian.  He says "Sims have you been doing burnouts?"  I said No, Why?  He says "well your clutch smells really hot, I think I'll follow you home just to be sure you make it ok, then I think you boys should just stay put the rest of the night".

It took a few seconds for me to recover from the headrush and comprehend what he REALLY was saying.   Then I just squeaked "OK" and he escorted us back to my folks house, looked at me really stern and said  "Get rid of that BAD CLUTCH before it gets you in trouble, ya hear?".

Yes Sir. :(
