Mitch f Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 I want to see it. Based on the previews, I'm hoping there's not a lot of CGI....one of My big pet peeves. Turns a potentially good movie into a fake that's easily spotted. Great special effects will never overcome bad writing or directing. Speaking of killing animals in movies, the CGI animal replacements are horrible. "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor

Getting choked up thinking about my dog right now. Someone sent me some facebook post about a dog's last day on earth before it had to be put down - the owner feeding him a big breakfast, taking him to his favorite park, etc. I wanted to kill that person. One of the toughest things I've ever read. I'm excited to see the movie. I think my wife and I may go on Saturday. Mom is coming up to watch the little one so we get a night out. She said she'd even see Star Wars if it meant we got to go out together. But I think this is one we can both enjoy. It's this one or "Joy" for me.

Mark Posted January 22, 2016 Author Posted January 22, 2016 What struck me most about the movie is the depiction of everyday life in the times - not knowing exactly where you're were going, constant hunger, danger, and fear. Yeah, just a movie, not a documentary, so read the whole story if wanting a factual account. I often think about what life must have been like back then, 100, 200, 300 years ago, especially around home here in Ste. Genevieve County. Surely you all have thought the same thing out in a canoe or in the woods. Hobby of mine is reading local and Missouri history, tying in to researching into family genealogy. My 5X Great Grandpa Derouuse was among the original French settlers in Kaskaskia, Illinois, arriving by around 1720. I found out in the past 10 years that he married a half blood princess daughter of an Illini chief. Pretty cool. I always knew I had Indian blood!! My mind does wonder sometimes with what it must have been like in settlers times. That's what I got out of the Revenant - it drew me in with the characters' life struggles in the time period, plus the scenery and surround sound on the big screen. Good movie - you guys won't be disappointed. Hog Wally 1
Al Agnew Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 That whole time period in the West fascinates me. I knew the Hugh Glass story, have read quite a bit about the mountain men and fur trade. It's hard to imagine the kind of courage it took to venture into the mostly unexplored West, living singly or in small groups, always on guard against unfriendly Indians. Some were in it for the money, but I suspect that most of them were as much or more interested in just seeing and living in that magnificent country. Hog Wally 1
grizwilson Posted January 23, 2016 Posted January 23, 2016 Well, to qualify, although my son is an actor, I go to a movie about once per year. It is a lot like going to McDonalds, each time I go it reminds me why i do not go(it makes the experience for others better that I am not there). I own 3 movies, Jeremiah Johnson, Tarpon and A River Runs Through It. While the BC scenery was excellent, the film work, stunts and acting excellent for me the movie dragged. I would prefer to watch Man in the Wilderness, yes I know the rabbit he caught in the snare looked like something I gave the kids on Easter, .... Have read each book also, think the books are better. Should have stayed home and tied flies, but Wife is Happy i took her out...so all good... g “If a cluttered desk is a sign, of a cluttered mind, of what then, is an empty desk a sign?”- Albert Einstein
Terrierman Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 The opening battle and the bear mauling scene were both really something. The movie was very well made but I do not think it was a very good depiction of how the early trappers lived. Nobody would have lived through the wet cold that was nearly constant in that movie. For me that part was actually a bit of a spoiler in that it kept me from suspending disbelief - one of the critical aspects to really getting into a story. ness and grizwilson 2
MOPanfisher Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 I watched the movie over the weekend. The scenery was great, the plot was fair, (wished they hadn't based it on Hugh Glass and then "modified" it). Overall the movie got a "fair" rating from me. I will watch it again at some point on DVD but it just didn't hit the spot for me, can't really put a finger on any one thing except the long cold ride down the river and a few small things. But it was better that the pathetic Star Wars VII.
