The movie was very well made but I do not think it was a very good depiction of how the early trappers lived. Nobody would have lived through the wet cold that was nearly constant in that movie. For me that part was actually a bit of a spoiler in that it kept me from suspending disbelief - one of the critical aspects to really getting into a story. Opening scene was cool. With the arrows zinging by, it reminded me of the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan on the Normandy beach, when the bullets were zinging by. Many did not live thru the winters, but some did. I think that was the point. Surprised it has taken some criticism on here. It's been a couple years since there was a good movie I wanted to see at the theater.
Al Agnew Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Okay, I went to see it tonight...I was not very impressed. The CGI was not all that good (especially the scenes with the wolves...REALLY poor rendition of wolves). The bear attack was decent. I thought that they went to unnecessary lengths to set the story in spectacular country, when it was fairly obvious to anybody who has spent time in the areas where the story really took place, or even anywhere in the American West, could tell that most of it was not the same setting. Actually, the real story took place mostly in the Dakotas, a far cry from those spectacular mountain landscapes. But I thought they could have filmed it in various Montana locations and still been more authentic than filming in Alberta, not to mention Argentina. They did film the big waterfall sequence on the Kootenai River in western Montana...I suppose that's something, anyway. Glass's tortuous trek back to a fort was, according to what is supposed to be the true story, even more harrowing than shown in the movie, since he did it all on his own and without a horse, subsisting on the lichens and marrow from the bones of a bison carcass shown in the first part of the trek in the movie. He crawled most of the way, depending upon the source (and maybe Glass's inability to keep his story straight) a distance of 200 to 350 miles! The young Jim Bridger was, indeed, one of those who left him for dead, the other was a man named either Fitzgerald or Fitzpatrick. No third man...and I won't be a complete spoiler and talk about that third person. Nor will I tell what finally happened when Glass made it back to the fort...but it wasn't what happened in the movie. All in all...a decent movie but a bit disappointing when you know the real story.
joeD Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 You're watching a movie, not a history lesson or precise rendition of supposed true events. If that were the case, then, yes, as a comedian once said, "Barney Rubble, what an actor!" Also, I don't remember a bad a++ hombre getting a town to paint its buildings red in the history books. That would never happen right?
Mark Posted January 28, 2016 Author Posted January 28, 2016 Surprise at some criticism. It's a movie!! After of couple years of Hobbitt and Star Wars movies, it was a great movie compared to the crap coming out nowadays. Was "Titanic" the actual events??? I'll take a good old western anytime, fiction or fact or loosely based on actual events. BilletHead and grizwilson 2
BilletHead Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 I agree Mark! Mrs BilletHead and I finally went and seen it Tuesday Afternoon. There were a total of six people in the theater. That is the benefit of going after it has ran for awhile in a small town. We enjoyed it and like you said it was a movie. I want all to remember whoever writes books or diary of what they recall of their actual events will not be spot on. Do you think those mountain men actually told the truth? Mitch f Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 I still want to see it! I haven't seen Star Wars either. I would rather see Russell Crow in the movie instead of Leo...he's a much better tough guy! ? "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor

As stated I am not a movie person, but try to take the wife at least once per year, so everyone knows why. Maybe if my Son's career continues I can be a critical adviser... likely not... Agree best movie I have seen in a spell. g BilletHead 1 “If a cluttered desk is a sign, of a cluttered mind, of what then, is an empty desk a sign?”- Albert Einstein
