I've maybe been careless in my knot tying too, but I've broken off enough that I really don't trust the knot strength in 100% fluoro. Many factors probably contributed to that too. Another thing to consider is the actual line diameter, there's a lot of specsmanship going on there too I re-tie like a squirrel buries nuts. Constantly. That is one of the reasons I hate a leader combo. When I use one (UL) I use a 7' or so leader, just so I can re-tie. If I don't like a knot I will OCD tie it until it is right. Mitch f and Ham 2

I tried nanofil and loved it, i'm mainly a river fisherman these days, with a little time on the lake in the summer. I didn't like tying the knots in the leader so I resisted using it and rigged up a spinning rod with some Invisx. It works fine, although does not cast near as easy as my two Nano rods. One thing I like about the Nano, is when swinging baits in the current, like a ned, or something else, the diameter allows it to swing slower keeping it in the zone longer. I took a buddy last week for a few hours who's not bass fished much, he used my floru rod with the same pound test, and immediately noticed mine was staying in the strike zone longer.. I've had good luck with the nano lately about not breaking at knots, but have in the past. It may just be me, but I break less using a mono leader? I love the my all flouro set up when I break off, but love the performance of my Nano/leader set up! Mitch f and grizwilson 2 There's no such thing, as a bad day fishing!
Mitch f Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 Like I mentioned before about specsmanship, look at the diameters. I remember when "trophy" lines were popular for folks who were going for a line record. They were supposed to break at the exact pound rating. I always shop diameters and not pound test ratings. And usually from trial and error over the years I've come up with what I think is appropriate for the lure I'm fishing. mixermarkb and dtrs5kprs 2 "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
DChance Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 Abrasion resistance. With light lines the finesse fishing is pretty typical as a clear water technique thus the lower visibility as you stated. Fluoro also does stretch it just does not have the recoil as copolymer or mono. I have used copolymer and Fluoro and honestly don't care either way. If I was on bull shoals or table rock then Fluoro would get the nod for sure. I also use the Alberto knot and have had zero issues with several brands of Fluoro. Ham 1
J-Doc Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 I tried Nanofil once when first trying the Ned. Broke off 3 and stripped it off my reel. Super light action St Croix spinning rod, 6lb Nanofil I think and Dave's jigheads. I was not happy I lost 3 of Dave's artwork in under an hour. Went to FC, rarely have I lost one since. I even use PLine CX Premium with it and no real issues. I did see PLine CX out fish Redlabel Seagar one time. I thought it was the line color at the time. The CX WA green, and the Red Label was clear. In green tinted water, 4-5ft visibility in 20ft range of fishing. Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. Gavin Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 I like braid on spinning reels. It pretty much eliminates line twist issues and lasts for years. Usually go with 6lb suffix in high vis yellow and tie on an 8-12lb flouro leader with a 3 turn surgeons knot or a uni uni. It will break a the line leader knot. Never an issue on a fish. Casts great, no line twist issues, and can break off when I want too when hung up while floating on the river. Just paddle back and retrieve your lure if not to dicey. It just works for me. Like it for jigs, Jerkbaits and flukes. Sometimes a small WTD plug or a Kastmaster. Bought all I use on a spinning rod setup but I don't fish lakes. Have not tried Nanofil, but I like the copolymer on my bait casters. Always have some some spools of fly tippet handy so it's no big deal to change flouro leader to mono to fish a small topwater. I have literally caught 1000's of fish on 6 lb Nanofil and I have never broken off a fish where the Nano failed. Never. Not once. It will happen eventually, but clearly not an issue for me. I primarily use P Line CX Premium for my leader. I bought Seaguar Red Label specifically to be leader material. I went back to P Line after numerous mystery break offs with the Red Label. Guest Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 Hybrid is neutral buoyant, with zero stretch. Basically it casts like mono but has qualities you see in FC. The zero stretch is a big deal in moving water. Nano needs a leader, correct? I got turned off trying to retie the leader, so I went back to the basics. Of course, I'm always tinkering with line size. Hybrid is cheap & stout & it casts really well on a spinning reel. That's why I like it.
dtrs5kprs Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 Preach it. Can't stand having to sit down and re-tie that leader. Mitch f 1
Gavin Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 Hybrid does not work as well as limp mono on a spin caster when you are on the river in 10-20 degree weather. Neither does braid. Tends to freeze to the spool.
