Flysmallie Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Yeah it's not unusual to get blown off of one of these southern lakes. Spent a lot of days sitting around trying to find something to do. But it's all part of it. Here's a video coming out of Little Mustang and running back to Lake Fork Marina while a storm is brewing. The problem is that you can't just run across the lake and make a good angle across the waves because there are trees everywhere. I had to make two bad cuts across the lake that day and my poor beat up cancer stricken dad, who was never a fan of my boat rides, was in there so I had to try to take it easy on him. GPS is a beautiful thing on that lake. Make good paths and continue following them. When the waves get big some of those trees are hard to spot and some disappear altogether. Sound is weird because the camera is mounted to the trolling motor on my dad's 20ft Champion. https://youtu.be/QXbtxTD-NQQ
dtrs5kprs Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Yep. Smithville can be like that. Can't tack because of the wood everywhere. It's worse on those lakes once the standing wood breaks off and just leaves the stumps. Harder to see.
fshndoug Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 I remember seeing waves 7 feet tall on Rayburn with the wind blowing 20-30 mph out of the northwest, looked like an ocean. Ham and dtrs5kprs 2
5bites Posted January 28, 2016 Author Posted January 28, 2016 Good granny!!! Lots of great info here guys and I appreciate it! Hopefully we land on a good weather week. Anything is possible in March. I I know my friends family are big fans of throwing arigs and swim baits. No matter what it's going to be a learning experience and I'm glad I got the opportunity. This may sound a little silly but let's say it's an average trip, weather and fish cooperation. What should I expect as an average for numbers and size? I know that's kinda wide open.

Or it could be surprisingly bad and you go back to the ramp wondering if you have any idea what you are doing. But you never know when that next bite is going to be a true monster. Ham 1

I've seen rollers as tall as 4ft with 1-2ft chop on top of that (5-6ft total) with 30-35mph winds on Beaver Lake. It was more than I wanted but my little RT188 did very well. Most people think a tin boat will beat you to death and you cannot get on big water but if you know how to drive a bass boat, it's fine. I don't prefer water that rough on any boat. Just beats up your equipment. Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! I owe fishinwrench a lot of thanks. Ham Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 J-Doc, when you get a minute, look at google earth or another mappng site and look at how Rayburn lays out Unlike the lakes up here, there aren't any twists and turns to hamper wave development. The waves grow and grow and grow as they roll down lake. The small craft advisories mean something down there. I've fished BSL when the wind was 30 mph and gusting to 45 mph and we caught fish. It wasn't the most fun I ever had, but I never felt like my life was in danger. No way I'm trying to fish Rayburn or Toledo Bend under those conditions. dtrs5kprs and Champ188 2 Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
J-Doc Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 That's incredible (I wasn't doubting anyone btw). I wouldn't have pictured waves getting 7ft on an inshore lake (other than the great lakes). I remember watching Zona and Overstreet on Rayburn a couple years ago and it got rough. Small craft warnings? That's crazy stuff! Need marine repair? Flysmallie Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 It gets the same way on Stockton at times. Not as often as those southern lakes but I have seen it just as bad. dtrs5kprs and Smalls21 2
