SpoonDog Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 The idea that rich kids go to school and poor kids go to the front lines doesn't sit particularly well for me, and if we're gonna pay a kid to sit in a barracks in Kuwait I don't see why we can't pay for a kid's physics course. But there were some sort of public service requirement (military or CCC/WPA type program like some have suggested) I'd be on board- have them lay pipe in Flint or fight fires out west for a season or two. "Where will the money come from?" is an excellent question, and one I wish we'd take seriously. No one raises the question when it's an aircraft carrier, and we have $400 billion to spend on the F-35. We don't ask the same question about the hundreds of military bases all over the globe, and we're spending $2.5 million plus per prisoner at Guantanamo. We're not opposed to blowing money, I just think we could be blowing money on something more constructive. jolicious and Flysmallie 2

That has bought charisma with his billions. He's tapped into frustrations, but I don't think he's electable and I don't think he could live up to the rhetoric. I'm pinning my hopes on the American people. Honestly Bernie's positions are probably closest to my own, plus he seems more focused on actual problems than manufactured ones. He doesn't seem as ideologically rigid as some of the republicans- Cruz can't even work with the folks in his own party. And he isn't as beholden to corporate interests as Clinton or Trump. IMO his biggest liability is just how incredibly white he is- I was watching his speech last night and it looked like a mashup between an Elks meeting and Bingo night at the old folks home. Any candidate is gonna have trouble passing legislation if Congress is dominated by the other party- whether it's Bernie or Cruz or anyone else. Trav and Kayak_Runner 2
Norm M Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Nah. legalizing pot is not a top 5 problem . It's just a way to increase tax revenues while decreasing the amount of tax dollars spent on the whole process from arrest to incarceration. Same with the gambling and prostitution . Those two have been going on since who flung the chunk, no one has found a way to stop them yet . If we are willing to give some one 4 years of college education for a set term of military service , then give them 4 years of college for a set term of civilian service that will benefit the country . The electronic books don't need to be free nor do the downloads of the subject matter . It can be done significantly cheaper than printed versions . Just think of the reduction in the wear and tear on our kids bodies without having to lug those heavy backpacks all their formative and young adult years ,that alone makes it worth doing . This coming from a dude who told his kids about how tough he had it because he had to walk uphill both ways in the snow on his school route . what a long strange trip it's been , put a dip in your hip, a glide in your stride and come on to the mother ship , the learning never ends
fishinwrench Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 I used to be all for legalizing weed.... until I smoked some of the stuff my daughter came across. NO....we don't need to be legalizing that $#it. Might as well legalize LSD while we're at it. Weed isn't weed anymore.

SpoonDog Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Maybe I missed something, but if we're suggesting Uncle Sam pick up the tab for a kid's education only if they join the military, it seems pretty unavoidable. Lower income students are going to be more compelled to take advantage of that offer than higher income students, who can afford to pay the full price tag of admission. Plus, not everyone is fit to serve. A diabetic can sit in a lecture hall. A diabetic cannot join the military. I know for a fact GI benefits have been instrumental in getting degrees, and I know folks who tanked high school, grew up in the military, and came out the other end with the discipline to excel and complete their degrees. That ain't a bad thing. But it isn't a route that's open to everyone, and as I said if it were some sort of national service program generally I'd be all on board. Chief Grey Bear and Trav 2
