It is a little weird, flipping a spoon instead of a jig. Am pretty good friends with one of the better dock spoon guys on TR, took him two years of telling me about it before I tried it.

Sounds like someone I know that struggled to be heard about a Midwest Finesse technique.

Soon to be renamed the Bass Pro Ranger Flash spoon,  (Couldn't resist either).

Not quite. The Cabela's version will be the Cabela's Ranger Flash Spoon, will come with instructions on trolling it for lake trout, and will cost $2 more.

that was nice to see a home boy catching them using a home technique.  since this last mlf started, i had been wonder when someone was going to put a spoon to work either on docks or off shore.  i would never show up at a clear lake without some spoons in the boat.  great job by james.

Had the same question about Dale Hollow. Guys were complaining about having trouble finesse fish around the docks, and none of them put a spoon in there. Chapman for sure knew about it. Heck, he was right beside Watson, and even mentioned Table Rock in the latest round.

My guess is because it's such a localized technique and even around here not everyone uses it much. The best part is the fish don't have to be active to catch them on it. Also if you don't put the  time in to learn it you probably don't have the confidence to try it. Im sure more will be trying it now that it was brought to light on MLF....... What a beat down.

Watson imploded after loosing those fish. But he recovered to go from zero to hero. It makes you wonder if he would've landed more fish with better technique. Spoons are inherently bad at keeping fish hooked up. Maybe that's why you don't see more pros doing. That bite usually occurs right after it gets hot enough to kill the topwater bite. I was lucky enough to have a day like Watson. But I've never been able to duplicate it. One things for sure, when that Marina spoon bite erupts, there's nothing that can keep pace with it.

Some folks like 12lb on the spoon, but they are hammers under those docks. I prefer heavier line 15-20lb & a heavy action rod to horse them out. The cross bar is a killer. It can ruin your day.

Don't get me wrong, I will pitch a smoke grub or Ned rig into the same dock stall if the spoon bite dies. My wife has out fished me with a 4" kinami smoke grub, in terms of numbers. Those same fish will hammer a fluke skipped under there too.

I wondered if the big spoon contributed to the lost fish. That was the first time I'd seen it done with a big spoon. The gentleman I learned it from uses the regular white spoon, Hazie Dazie I think, 1/2oz. He doesn't even swap out the hooks, and uses a big rod, big line. It's not like deep water spooning at all, not at all a finesse deal.
