Members tylerupton Posted February 25, 2016 Members Posted February 25, 2016 Moved to Republic a few months back. Lived in northern China before that for 4.5 years. -30 winters. I've seen most of the fishing around here is meant for boats, so, I'm on the lookout for good bank fishing. Also got my amateur radio tech license since I've been back. And trying to find an entry level job into the IT field. Aiming for Linux/networking. Thinking about getting a Lew's Speed Spool, but that's a heck of a stupid investment for bank fishing maybe. But it is made of aluminum, so I'm guessing it'd last a long time. Yep. Also never tried walleye, musky, or trout. And I want to try fly fishing. Although it seems most of the lakes around here are for boats, you have an awesome assortment of fish around here I want to try. I grew up in southern Illinois. Not a great assortment and the water is brown there.
fishinwrench Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Hey Tyler. Although most of us use boats it should be enlightening to hear that 90% of the fish are caught within casting distance of the bank, so while it may take a bit more excersize to access the fish you'll still have an equal opportunity to catch them. Don't skimp on tackle just because you lack a boat, good quality gear enhances the experience regardless of where your standing when a fish bites. Until you can afford a boat, a pair of waders will help, and they are affordable. Welcome.
Quillback Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Welcome Tyler - You can poke around on Table Rock and find some bank access. The Big M COE park and the area around the boat launch has quite a bit of bank access, at least at the water level we have now. If you have some waders and are willing to dodge around the buck brush you can stay busy for a few hours. I've caught several bass in the past casting from in front of the parking lot before launching my boat.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted February 25, 2016 Root Admin Posted February 25, 2016 Here's a thread dedicated just to bank fishing on Table Rock Lake. tylerupton 1
ness Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Welcome Tyler. It's not all about fishing from a boat. It's just that we wade & canoe fishermen are mostly thinkers and doers, not talkers There are tons of opportunities to fish from the bank or by wading. There are hundreds of miles of streams to fish, or, for just a few shekels, you can get a float tube or a canoe, which will open up a lot of water that's out of reach on foot. Read up -- it's free! Good luck. Daryk Campbell Sr 1 John
Flysmallie Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Living in Republic you are close to a lot of bank/wading fishing. But like ness mentions it would mostly be on the rivers, which is a whole lot of fun. I spent a lot of time in my life in a bass boat but prefer a canoe these days.
trythisonemv Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Fly fishing is great for this area! Get some waders and hit the creek. Crane in close roaring river not too far. Taney offers a wide variety of access to fish. Also the James isn't far from republic either. Good luck and welcome
