What's the face mask for?

Posted

SPF sun protection. Big fish fight hard and carp are big fish. Starting to get more attention. I would love to find some big grass carp.

Yep sun protection all the way.  When you talk to someone that's had skin cancer, they'll tell you to cover your skin.  Hence the long sleeves and pants.  AND it does great keeping bugs out of my nose and mouth.

You know how special that deal is right. I've got some really good fishing opportunities close at hand, but I don't have that one.

That's cool!

I've never been successful getting a carp to take a fly in muddy Mississippi slough water.  What fly are you using?

Pete

The water I'm fishing is pretty clear.  Muddy water would be a different challenge.  Most of the time I'm using small dry's/poppers you'd use for bream.  Lately, I've been experimenting with nymphs wrapped in foam that rest on the surface a few seconds before sinking slowly...they've been working really well.  Something about that slow fall that does it.  Conversely, anything moving across the bottom (traditional carp/hybrid flies scare the he!! out of them).

I used CDC fibers that looked just like cottonwood blooms when they were dropping out of the trees.  I would lay it down right in the path of a fish eating them only to watch them cruise right by it.  I can catch the same fish on corn though.

I've not fly fished for carp but if you have mulberry trees there I've heard of people tying larger "mulberry" shaped flies.  Carp will slurp up floating mulberries.
