I have never seen a reel even approach the line twist that a spirex will if it is a trigger and you use the handle to close the bail. Just terrible. Most anything would be an improvement, and I am a Shimano guy. It does have the trigger, but she does close the bail by hand................still gets line twist!!! I bought them for her because I thought they would be easy for her to use.........big mistake! They only see use for crappie now, off the dock with a bobber. Don't want to try to throw them over 10 feet. And they still get tangled up. Useless is a perfect description!!!!
dtrs5kprs Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 Making a good casting reel is clearly not the same as making a good eggbeater. I wouldn't have anything to do with a Daiwa casting reel in the same price range as their spinning reels I use. mixermarkb 1

Even with proper technique that will cause line twist. It has to rotate back to the trigger.

I can't help but be a little worried that the Revo spinning reels share the same OEM and maybe some of the same problems the lews spinning reels have, although I stress that this is just a theory. I'd stay with the diawa and pflugers that seem to get pretty consistent good reviews here and elsewhere, but that's just my opinion- Who makes Pflueger reels? Edit: Meant where are they made?
mixermarkb Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 I don't know- I do know that Lews and Abu share at least one OEM. Pfluger might be made in the same place as well, I really have no idea-

And what is an Air Rotor? Don't get caught up in the number of ball bearings game. If they put quality bearings in a reel, they'd only need a few. mixermarkb, dtrs5kprs and abkeenan 3
MOPanfisher Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 Not all ball bearings are the same, and not every single place on a reel needs them, that being said, if I get a reel with more bearings at the same price I am at least going to give it a "whirl" in the store. Some reels are probably very good, they just don't feel right to me though. Although the really really good ones, the Stellas, Steez etc. are fun to hold and spin around a while I always put them carefully back. For someone like Bill who fishes for a living and probably well 250 days a year it makes sense to buy high end stuff. for someone like me, it makes more sense to buy something along the lines of a Pfleuger President, which I figured for a 2 year reel, toss and replace, but they are still going strong, my fear is that they will change something or raise the price and I will wish I had a couple in boxes sitting on a shelf. The one reel I cannot seem to wear out is an old Diawa Black Gold, been at my house for 30 plus years, no instant anti reverse on it, but the dang thing is nearly indestructible. I am always on the lookout for a new version, but so far I just end up buying another Pfleuger President. Daryk Campbell Sr 1

I'm surprised you think otherwise. What kind of problems are you having? I have been putting these reels thru normal use since last fall. The SX started making a clicking noise not long after I got it and the bail return spring was broken. Got that fixed and now it has started seizing up. Lots of resistance from inside the gear case. The S models seem to still be operating pretty smoothly, only issue I had with them was durability. I did drop one a little harder than normal on the deck of the boat than probably would be advised and broke the plastic that holds the bail to the body. Was probably my fault but still pretty disappointed in the durability. Overall I feel like I could get the performance I am getting from the Revos as I could get out of a much cheaper reel.
Members Bozinsek Posted May 29, 2016 Members Posted May 29, 2016 Call me crazy, but my favorite reel of all time is the Okuma Avenger. Everytime I see one at a yard sale or flea market, I snag one up. I've got four of them so far and it is "my go to" reel!

She doesn't understand why I need a $100 reel as much as I don't understand why she needs a $100 purse. Dear lord! Someone NEEDS a $100 purse?!?! I have one $19.99 model I've carried several years now and will continue to carry it as long as it holds out. Rather have fishing tackle or golf gear. Don't laugh, but I bought a small soft tackle bag on sale at Cabela's because I decided it would make a great purse when the one I'm using now wears out.
