Members chomper Posted June 7, 2016 Members Posted June 7, 2016 Friend of mine has an 1990 60 HP evinrude that won't pee water with the thermostat mounted but it will when thermostat is removed. Thermostat is brand new and water pump/impeller new last summer ( maybe 5 hrs. run time). Any suggestions on why it's not peeing water ? And also...anybody know someone that is an evinrude mechanic ?
zarraspook Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 Can only be one of four things... 1. motor is not hot enough to open thermostat.. ( wrong thermostat).. 2. New impeller broke.. 3. Bad "new?" thermostat.. 4. Small "critter" has plugged up the pee hole/tube.. I worked in small motor repair shop 40+ years ago... fishinwrench Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 There is a service bulletin on 88-91 2 and 3 cylinder powerheads. If the indicator nipple is on the lower exhaust cover plate it needs to be plugged and a hole drilled and tapped into the top of the cylinder block to accept the nylon nipple. BUT I've actually gotten around this by simply replacing the indicator hose with one long enough to route up and over the top of the cylinder head. The problem with the low hose is that it can allow an air pocket to form at the top of the water cavity near the thermostat. Routing the hose over the top causes the water to seek that level and fill the air pocket. The REAL problem is that the 3 bladed impeller produces enough volume but not enough pressure.... but for some reason the designers feel that moving the nipple is the best fix, rather than redesigning the impeller.
