Johnsfolly Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 Has anyone gone out mushroom hunting after the rains? I am planning on a foray or two this week to see if there are any chanterelles popping up in my usual haunts. I'm hoping that the rains will provide enough moisture for a summer season of mushrooms this year. BilletHead 1
BilletHead Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 Still looking here John, Just from the road but this is how I always do it. Will give you a shout if and when I do. Starting to get hot enough, some moisture is there but not like last season. Hoping it will come together right soon, BilletHead Johnsfolly 1 "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" Johnsfolly Posted July 6, 2016 Author Posted July 6, 2016 We had a bunch of rain our way over the weekend and then again today. If the mycelia withstood the drought, I would think that around here we should be seeing some mushrooms the end of the week or weekend. I'll let you know what I find. May have to take the .22 along for protection just in case some angry tree rats attack. tho1mas and BilletHead 2
MOPanfisher Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 There are usually some Boletes (??) that pop up in my yard after summer rains. I have a friend that loves them, I could take or leave them either way. In fact usually leave them to the lawnmower, as I am not sure enough about most shrooms to be expiramenting. My friend doesn't mind, but has also driven the porcelain bus a time or two when wrong. BilletHead and Johnsfolly 2
BilletHead Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 There are no old bold mushroom hunters, I have partaken on some Missouri boletes before. One book says pass on hard to ID missouri types of them. On the other hand I have passed on some that the MDC says are good. https://nature.mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/field-guide/pallid-bolete They look a lot like the bitter bolete. Next time I run across one or the other I will try a spore print. Gavin Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 Never felt sure when I've found boletes. There should be some chanterelles about, sometimes in abundance.
Johnsfolly Posted July 8, 2016 Author Posted July 8, 2016 Went out with Follysbetterhalf tonight on a conservation area that I had not visited in several years hoping to get in a nice hike and also find some edible mushrooms. We did start finding many non-edibles or non-descript little brown and white ones like these. Then they got a little more interesting. Up to this point we were pretty high above the creek bottoms where I thought that we would have better luck on chanterelles. We started getting lower and my wife found the first chanterelles right in the pathway (sorry about the poor picture, must have been my shroom fever made me shake the camera). These guys looked like they were up for a couple of days already. Hunted along both sides of the pathway and covered a pretty big area and found several more. Pretty excited and definitely will go back out the next several days. Also found this bolete and will have to id it before we do anything else with it. Definitely stayed away from these guys. Got a little scared even taking the picture We had a great time. Saw a couple of deer and lots of different wildflowers. Now it raining again. If I can't fish the flooded streams, I can at least find some mushrooms. BilletHead and dan hufferd 2
dan hufferd Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 I haven't went for chanterelles in a while I might have to give it a go. Thanks for the report
Johnsfolly Posted July 9, 2016 Author Posted July 9, 2016 Dan - chanterelles are definitely one of my favorite mushrooms to eat. Good luck hunting them when you get out. Let us know how you do.
Gavin Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 White shrooms in your last photo look like Amanitas. Never eat those! Will kill you, and very common.
