evilcatfish Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 Hey all, a couple buds and I are planning a float in late August and I'm wondering about the smallmouth fishing. Most of my Eleven point experience is closer to the Arkansas boarder (where I've done quite well) but we are considering floating Greer to Riverton. I know this stretch is more trout heavy but I've spoke with a couple individuals telling me that late in the summer the smallie fishing should be good here. Just wondering what some of you all think as I'd love to hear more opinions on the matter!
Ham Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 There are smallies there. It is much more trout heavy though. Fun little stretch of water. I plan on floating it again, but I think I will wait until the rec traffic is back in school. I hear there is some really interesting water in Mary Decker Shoal. I started my float below it. Gavin Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 They stock a lot of trout down there, but you can catch fair numbers of bass and some nice chain pickerel if you target them. Ham is correct. That section gets quite a bit of weekend jet boat traffic in the summer months...would go during the week, or weekends during the off months.
Johnsfolly Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 I caught these two smallies while targeting trout just below the Hwy 19 bridge by Greer. It was Jan. and I have heard that the smallmouth move up towards the spring at that time. Would not be surprised if you get on them in Aug. Good luck. 10" smallmouth. 14" smallmouth.
Al Agnew Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Yeah, there are smallmouth in that stretch, but it certainly isn't a stretch of river I'd choose for smallies in late summer. But it's a great multi-species run, with rainbows, smallmouth, and as others have said, an excellent population of chain pickerel.
jdmidwest Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Actually, the smallies move down river in the winter months toward the spring because the water is warmer in winter. The river above Greer Spring has less spring water in it. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
evilcatfish Posted July 14, 2016 Author Posted July 14, 2016 Thanks for all the info guys, we might be modifying our plans a little bit but either way I'll post some pics if any good fish our caught. While I am a little nervous about the jet boat thing it definitely isn't a deal breaker for me as I've been to the Current and other areas where they are pretty thick
Flysmallie Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 The jets on the 11 Point are no comparison to all the trash jet boaters on the current. evilcatfish 1
Ham Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 I was talking more canoes and yaks than jet boats, but whatevs Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
