some of the best live catfish bait

That's what we use to load our trotlines when we set them. Grandpa would usually use the 3" "perch" (green sunfish) for the majority of the line. He would always save a few "black perch" of the thick 5+ inch size and put them at the deepest point of the line going for the bigger cats. We never used "pumpkin seeds" as for whatever reason they ALWAYS died off first and were a waste.

It's a conspiracy to keep anglers confused and buying more tackle.  I grew up with "black perch, punkin seeds, jack salmon, white cat, etc."    Black bass ( largemouth, smallmouth and sprotted) the various generic "perch" and crappie are all members of the sunfish family.  White and striped bass are true bass, and yellow perch, walleye and saugers are all members of the perch family. Assuming that my holy memory is correct.  Fortunately they are all still fun to catch and in some cases eat.

Your memory serves well. Also the darters are in the perch family.

If the darters were big enough to fillet I might have remembered them!

No need to fillet them. Dredge in seasoned flour and fry them up. Don't even have to gut them! :D just need 30 or 40 per person.

Wow. That's incredible.  I didn't realize we had them in Bull Shoals.  Thanks for the information. :goodjob:
