It sometimes takes more thn one cast into a spot to get a hit. a good troller will beat the pants off of the cast and retrieve any day of the week. you can cover more water, and control your speed and depth much better. yes, there are bass in brush piles by docks on LOZ, but there are way more off shore bass than by the docks. trolling is not my cup of tea, but i have fished with a couple of people over the years that are experts in the art of trolling, and it is amazing at how many bass they can catch in a day. you would not want them to be competing against you in a tournament, providing trolling is allowed. bo
Bill Babler Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 Several years ago, and I mean several, as this was back in the top 150 days before the Elite. There was a Top 150 won here by strolling a Fish Dr. My memory is probably off on this deal, but I believe the only disqualification I have ever heard of with the big boys, may have been Jim Bitters and this was long ago. James might know. I believe he was strolling a Carolina Rig, and got a DQ. I have seen and fished with the very top fishermen that fish the Rock, from back in the day. I could name a dozen. From now till creek channel spoon time they will drag a football jig deep from Kimberling to Cricket Creek, and that is the deal. We are off topic on this so getting back to topic is great. All day, the guy dragged a football jig with his trolling motor. So yes, it's done a lot. But I'm with Bo --- it isn't right. The rule either needs to be enforced or struck down. In my pro's defense, he wasn't standing on the trolling motor and dragging his jig...he was just drifting, but as Champ pointed out to me, the pro did have to use the trolling motor to change direction, steer away from a boat dock, etc., while dragging his bait. I've caught fish dragging a FB jig, jerk bait, swim bait, etc. from the back of the boat and, yes, sometimes Champ starts the TM and moves a small amount down the bank or changes direction while I'm doing that. Guess I'm trolling / strolling. big c 1 Donna Gilzow Bella Vista, Arkansas The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope. --John Buchan, 1915
vernon Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 Didn't Gary Klein win a BASS event on Bull Shoals a couple of hundred years ago doing this? Seems I remember an article in BASS MASTER about it and they made it a point to stress that he WASN'T trolling (and that trolling was illegal) but rather was dragging a finesse worm behind the boat for up to a hundred yards at a time occasionally correcting his course with the trolling motor. I remember thinking that it sure sounded like trolling to me but what do I know? That might even have been when the term "strolling" was coined but then again, I might just be dreaming this whole deal. I know there have been times that Kathy has waxed my behind dragging lizards and worms behind the boat while I'm fishing a spinnerbait or jig and working down a bank. Heck, half the time she's reading a magazine and drinking coffee while doing it! All of a sudden she'll just say, "Uh-oh, I think I've got another lunker!" First I heard of "strolling" was an article in Bassmaster about Terry Oldham doing it on TR. He was keeping a grub at the depth of the thermocline, vertically, and just leaving it there. This was maybe 1986-87. It noted that it wasn't considered trolling because the angler was intermittently reeling the bait in, and making a new presentation. Fine line I guess. magicwormman 1
