Ness - I would have to agree that between Dos Equis Amber and Negra Modelo, I'm a much bigger fan of the Modelo. Used to drink that a lot when I was living in Florida. Negra Modelo was also my favorite brew to braise beef short ribs. Then I moved around and couldn't get it easily and switched to Shiner Bock for braising. Now Modelo is readily available, I may just have to pick up a few and some short ribs . I'll be interested to see what you conclude between Modelo and Newcastle. ness 1

Which would you choose? Brought the one on the left up to sample and I got skunk in my nose. So, I knew it wasn't the Modelo I had the other night. Soldiered on and the flavor was ok, but Modelo wins hands down. And I kinda wanted the Newcastle to win. Dont remember skunky Newcastle before, but I know light, especially fluorescent lights are what causes it, and clear bottles don't protect as well as colored. That's why they do it. Dang. 5 left.... That was maybe ten minutes ago and the Modelo still has a nice ring of foam around the glass. John
Terrierman Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 It's probably just me but I prefer XX Amber to either Newcastle or Modelo Negro. But after all give me a good German or Dutch brown beer and I will probably like it. Or a Porter or anything brown and malty.
ness Posted March 4, 2017 Author Posted March 4, 2017 Yeah, brown and malty here too. I pick up a *lot* of malt in Negra. Glad I tried it side-side with a couple others. Next up is KC Bier dunkle. Then maybe a German. My guess is Negra out malts them based on memory. John

One was cider and the other was porter. I also discovered that the competition there meant every pub served good stuff, even if you did not know the brand. Terrierman 1
WHARFRAT Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 To windy to fish,. So opened up a Pliny the Elder clone. Then a Dogfish Head 90 min IPA Clone. The Pliny was good, but no where close to 9% abv,. Still a good example of a west coast DIPA. If we can get it closer to 9, then look out! Dogfish Head was amazing. One would think it would be overly hoppy, since you are adding hops every 10 minutes of a 90 minute boil. But sooooo balanced. And a big head too! ness 1 @lozcrappie
