Members Fish Hound Posted October 12, 2016 Members Posted October 12, 2016 I caught this back in August and not sure if it what is called. A Goggle Eye or Rock Bass? It looks like it belongs in the perch or sunfish family.
J-Doc Posted October 12, 2016 Posted October 12, 2016 Yes that is a rock bass. Some call it goggle eye. At least that's my take on it. Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! I owe fishinwrench a lot of thanks. He has been a great mechanic with lots of patience!
Mike jones Posted October 12, 2016 Posted October 12, 2016 The goggle eye/Rock bass we catch in Missouri and Table Rock all have the red eye...also caught some a few weeks ago on Champlain. Johnsfolly 1
Quillback Posted October 12, 2016 Posted October 12, 2016 I'm thinking possibly a green sunfish? Johnsfolly 1
Johnsfolly Posted October 12, 2016 Posted October 12, 2016 I can't see the dorsal fin well enough to see in there is a dark spot and the coloration on the marking on the cheeks is kind of muddled to get a good id on this fish. however the light edging of the pelvic and anal fins are not indicative of a goggle-eye/rock bass. It's very likely a warmouth. green sunfish or a hybrid of the two. JestersHK, trythisonemv and bluebasser86 3
Brian Jones Posted October 12, 2016 Posted October 12, 2016 I'm also going with a warmouth or green sunfish/hybrid cross based on the color, striping and red tint on its "ear".
Quillback Posted October 12, 2016 Posted October 12, 2016 I could go warmouth, I was split between green sunfish or warmouth.
Members Fish Hound Posted October 12, 2016 Author Members Posted October 12, 2016 I'll go with Warmouth. After getting online and googling goggle (goggling google?) it sort of resembles a goggle eye (except no red eye) but does look more like the pictures of warmouth I found online. From the fight this little guy put up if they got up to 9-10 inches that would be a lot of fun on an ultralight. So far this is the only fish I have caught in Beaver that I did not catch in Kansas and I don't think they have them there unless in extreme southeast maybe. On the same trip I did catch what I would call a green sunfish which looks just like the picture of the fish in Johnsfolly hand above. All of them are pretty fish. Thanks for the feedback. bluebasser86 Posted October 15, 2016 Posted October 15, 2016 It's a Warmouth. I catch them all the time at a couple of the local lakes. Almost beat the state record last year. They vary quite a bit in color from the blue-green one in OP's picture, to brightly colored like the one I posted, to nearly black. Johnsfolly and Dan the fisherman 2
