Seth Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 I filled my last two rifle tags this weekend. On Friday, I shot a big doe and then a 9 pointer on Sunday morning. My buddy was in the blind with me Sunday and took the doe that the buck was following right after I dropped him. I've passed on bigger racked bucks this season than this one, but he was bumping a doe through a brushy draw and he looked pretty nice at first glance so I took him. That's the heck of it when they are pushing does around. Sometimes things just happen fast and ground shrinkage kicks in when you walk up on him. He'll still eat good though! I'm tagged on bucks since I also got one with my bow, but I may break out the Mathews and go try to fill an archery tag on a slickhead if we get some snow before season ends. I'll always go out and try for a deer with snow on the ground. Otherwise it's time to start thinking about slabs, smallies and gigging suckers for the rest of the fall/winter. Johnsfolly Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Congrats Seth. Great job filling your tags this year!
JestersHK Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 That first doe looks really big, might just be the angle. You hunting up north? Nice job on the tag fillage.

Seth Posted November 22, 2016 Author Posted November 22, 2016 It's a bit blurry because the Iphone focused on the twig in front of my buddy, but here is the video of me shooting the doe. She got some big time air after I shot her.
JestersHK Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Nice shot. Last day of rifle season and I'm stuck at work... Going to dust off the ol Ruger and try to get one with the pistol in a few weeks. Seth and Johnsfolly 2
Haris122 Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 What was the distance on that doe? 60-70 yds? Off hand shot right, not resting on sticks? Looks like a nice tougher shot to make from off hand.

Looks like a nice tougher shot to make from off hand. She was only 35-40 yards. There is a reason why I very very rarely flub up a shot on a deer with a rifle and it is because I don't do the off hand thing. My left elbow was on my left knee so I had a pretty good rest. Normally I would have had my Caldwell deadshot field pod with me, but I had left it in an elevated blind that we hunted the rest of the weekend. MOPanfisher 1
Haris122 Posted November 24, 2016 Posted November 24, 2016 Wow, how did I misjudge the distance by that much. Well, nice shot nonetheless. I like to rest the gun up against a tree. I feel I do better that way than the elbow on the knee. I had a 70 yard or so shot opportunity last Saturday, but it would've had to be off hand, or I would've had to get up and move to the nearest tree, and risk getting busted. In the end I just didn't do either, and hoped they'd get closer on their own. They didn't so I just figured I wait for some other deer to show up. Later on saw 2 more, this time making their way towards me. Was about to take a shot resting the rifle on my knee after they re-emerged from behind a tree or pair of trees, but instead they disappeared on me. Never came out the other side of it, and probably used the plentiful shade to their advantage to lose me in it.
Seth Posted November 24, 2016 Author Posted November 24, 2016 I picked up one of those Primos monopod trigger stick rests to try this year too. It wasn't as solid as I would have liked when using it on the forearm stock, but if I used it to support the stock and then grabbed the blind with my hand and laid the forearm on my hand, I was dang near bench rest solid. It surprised me how mich more atable I was when I rested the stock instead of just the forearm. It doesn't take up near as much space as the field pod rest either.
