So is there a secret to spoons?

Subtle jerks or twitches?

Or long violent upward swings on the rod similar to hooksets?  I've done both and caught fish with both. Seems subtle got more bites but lately, I chase off fish with a spoon.  When it drops, the fish swim up to it, look at it, laugh, and swim away.  I know because I see them on the graph......laughing. Dang HDS....

Had me laughing also (at the post).  I  have never used a spoon,  and am curious.  I primarily fish in creeks and rivers,  lots of debris.   I'm afraid that I will snag left and right with an exposed treble hook.

I just snap it up about 2-3 feet and follow it back down.  Pretty much all year i do this.  When bass fishinf if they spook off I'll hit them with a drop shot. Striper I spoon as fast as possible

This is how I vertical jig in warmer water; when it gets cold and they ball up I slow it w a y down and often go to jigs.  When horizontal jigging, a summertime favorite, a snap a hook set and then stay in contact with the spoon and let it flutter down - they always hit it on the drop and you have to rare back pretty good to get a hook set but this is a great way to cover water and a blast when you are on fish.  You never know what you will pull up, every game fish that swims will eat them.

Sounds about like what I've been trying.   Didn't think it was rocket science.

What is the spoon of choice?  I have used all different kinds but the one that always seems to stay on top of my pile of jigging spoons is the old CC Spoon (cheap) with a little bit of a bend in it, and an upgraded hook.

I bought a handful of these awhile back, thinking that they'd be good..... but they SUCK. IMG_20161215_104016.jpg

I have tried painting the CC spoons white, and chartreuse, and white/red, but the plain silver is always the one that does best for me.

I also have an array of painted spoons. Lifelike representations.  Plain old silver has always done better.  I forgot about bending the spoon.  Will try that again.

I've got to get out and put some time on the water before the polar bear...but the extended forecast is rain/snow/rain/snow/rain/snow!!!  Depressing!!!!!!

Mike, it's supposed to be 55 for a high Saturday and then falling like a meteor in the afternoon with 15-25 mph NW winds. Donna and I will be at Table Rock. Yes, it may throw ice pellets or snowflakes at us in the afternoon but I KNOW you aren't going to let a woman out-tough you. LOL

All joking aside, should be a CATCHING day with that front coming in.

Donna's a trooper. She has the best in clothes that money can buy --- UnderArmor Infrared and assorted other cold gear, plus GuideWear outer garments --- and she doesn't back down from anything weather-wise. If I go, she's with me. I'm blessed to be married to such a great fishing buddy.

I have a box of CCs in 3/4 or 1/4 silver or gold but I swap upgrade the hooks and swivels and add eyes and sometimes flash out to the stock spoons.  I have a box of Binks in 1/4 through 1 oz as well that I use when a white or colored spoon is a better choice.  Those are my mainstays, but I also use jigging raps at times, especially vertically in cold water, and other spoons in trolling or other situations.  On LOZ I have definitely caught more fish on 3/4 silver CCs, but I am growing more fond of Binks painted spoons the more I fish them - I always have a couple tied on.

Jointed spoons catch fisherman, not fish.  I know, I have a few hook marks from them as well.....
