Sore Thumbs Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 Considering getting shallow water anchors. I fish in Oklahoma quite a bit as well as Beaver and Table Rock. Any recommendations?
gitnby Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 ask Champ188 which ones he uses! I think it's the brand that comes with a free boat wrap and a jersey emblem? Donna G, Royal Blue, Wart 57 and 2 others 5
Hammer time Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 Neither, our fish tend to spawn deeper in our are lakes and would be money saved to use on baits gear or fuel. Just my opinion. Champ188 and shark bait 2
Sore Thumbs Posted January 30, 2017 Author Posted January 30, 2017 I said Oklahoma too. Arkansas river and Kerr are super shallow
Members lojack Posted January 30, 2017 Members Posted January 30, 2017 I live in Illinois and, where I primarily fish, a wake bait is considered a deep diver. I recently installed Talons on my boat and use them often, up here. The Power Poles versus Talons debate is like Ford versus Chevy. I like Talons because they go straight down and there is no extra fluid tanks to fit into the bilge area. I go to Table Rock once or twice a week each year, for the last 17 years. Last year was my first year with the Talons and I might have deployed them twice. The rock hard bottom doesn't allow them to set into the bottom and the boat will move with any wind or waves. That and I'm primarily fishing or sitting in deeper water so didn't use them. If you do fish other lakes that they can be utilized, they are a benefit. For Table Rock, a trolling motor with spot lock would serve you better. That is on my list.
Blll Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 If you frequently have a rear deck partner, Talons can be a real "in the way" issue. Talons are also more easily moved by swells/wakes because of their more vertical deployment. That said, I believe they have a deeper water capability and less install issues. I've fished on boats with both and they really do help in less than 10-12 fow. JMO
Champ188 Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 Why does the phrase "boobs on a boar hog" keep coming to mind? Even if you do fish in Oklahoma, how many times do you sit still in shallow water if you're not bed fishing? I just don't see them being worth $3-4K a pair for fishing this part of the country. tho1mas, Hammer time, abkeenan and 2 others 5

Now, now. Free your mind. If you unbolt them, and hook up 200' of good rope, they'll make great anchors for crappie fishing. Royal Blue, Hammer time, Sore Thumbs and 2 others 5
Members Joenothum Posted January 30, 2017 Members Posted January 30, 2017 I do not have one for my boat but my father in law got a set put on his brand new ranger Z21. As of fishing with him a handful of times we have never seen them deployed. But because this is an expensive boat he hates the idea of tying up to a dock to park the truck when he is fishing by himself so I think he uses them a lot when he is by himself loading and unloading the boat. If the dock is shallow enough you can pull up next to it and set the anchors and step right onto the dock. But again he spent a lot of money on the boat so he is extremely mindful not tp scuff the boat or anything. Just another use for a shallow water anchor.
bluebasser86 Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 I looked into them a good deal when I bought my boat. Seems like the PP had more moving parts to break, but the Talons have a tendency to get mud and silt stuck inside them if they're used on soft bottoms often. Not sure if that helps, but those were a couple of the important points I found.
