I've thought very hard about trying to build my own rod. Right now I don't have time for another hobby, but I appreciate the offer. How much does the basic stuff to get started cost?

I did this once. Had a buddy get a whole bunch of blanks for $10 on a going out of business sale and he gave me one. I used mudhole.com and swamplands tackle to get what I needed. Did it once and let me say I will not do it again. mucho respect for rod builders, not much money to be made there. that is a skill

No $$$ without a wholesale account. I had a Mudhole wholesale account about 12 years ago. First break was roughly 40%.

all I know is that I wouldn't have been able to give away the rod I built the way it looked.......functional and I do still use it and it works fine, but that craft is not a simple one.

Basic stuff: A coffee mug. A large telephone book. A cradle like this: http://www.mudhole.com/Pacific-Bay-RodSmith-Hand-Rod-Wrapper-RW-JR.

A rat tail file, a straight file, tweezers, sand paper, masking tape, quick epoxy, a lighter with candle, tip glue, high build epoxy syringes, mixing cup. All a start.

Now days I use white silk thread and use the epoxy to make the thread transparent/translucent. Cool effect on a matte graphite rod.

Bringing this one back from the dead- Sportsman's (Lew's HQ) in Springfield have the Mach IM6 rods on clearance for $40, both in a 6'7" Ned Rig special, and a 6'9" finesse spin. They fit the bill just fine for the Ned, for very little money.

Also, killer deal on the Lew's tournament mb baitcasting reels, half off, $70 I think, for a 10 bearing reel with their Multi Setting Brake system, which is a centrifugal and magnetic combo. Well worth a stop if you are running through Springfield on I44 during business hours...

That’s a steal.

Would they be able to ship those items without a huge fee?

Gotta tell a little Ned rig story.  A couple of years ago, our oldest and his family came up for a visit.  His wife is from Taiwan, and her cousin or something had come over from Taiwan. I was up front with the granddaughter, trying to catch some bluegills on an ultra light, I’d hook one and let her reel it in.

I started hearing some chatter in Chinese, didn’t pay too much attention, the cousin couldn’t speak much English.  Then the chatter got a lot louder and more excited. They had found my Ned rig rod, and managed to open the nail and drop the lure to the bottom.  They got excited when they hooked a fish!  It was a little spot in 22-25 feet of water.  I unhooked it, and after lots of pics, released it.  I got back up front and made one Cast before they started in again, had another fish.

we switched to fishing with Ned rigs.  Just dropped them straight down and never moved them, just let what little wind there was drift us along.  Ended up with a dozen or so small spots.

I followed this thread and listened along for years.  Not much is new in fishing just seems to get recycled.  I used this rig sporadically, never understood how it could be more effective than a paddle tail or some of the other plastics, but it is. I have fished it off and on for 3 years. A couple uncles, cousins and  I were up on the upper MIssouri last June.  First of June coincides with the smallmouth spawn that far north.  The water was low and we were pitching to the beach and fishing shallow reefs.  They outfished me the first day on this stupid thing,  BADLY on both species.  I threw everything.  Too add insult to injury they outfished me in the late morning troll to finish off our walleye limit with better fish.  Ton of little cigars in this area.  They even outfished live leeches and harnesses trolling or drifting out the back  of the boat.  The rod in the holder or on the boat floor as beer thirty commenced.  Stupidist, weirdest thing ever to me.  It's a dog turd on a hook.  I have a dedicated bag with every color and weight right now.  I don't understand it and have heard lots on the subject.  Eyecons and legend tournaments are a plenty to fish it on.  The closest thing I ever used was the old lindy fuzz e grub on a mushroom head.  This is more effective, I used both next to each other.
