shrapnel Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 Switched to a Tatula and a 7'1" St Croix Rage last fall for my Jerk Bait set-up. Have thrown both 15lb and 12lb Invis-X...and they both keep busting in the guides just outside the reel! Always on a long cast, almost like it's breaking somewhere in the vicinity of where each cast ends. The rod is the micro guides, so very hard to tell which, or if it's the rod. I tried swabbing best I could with a cotton q-tip looking for a bad guide, thought I found a "maybe" so sanded it with a dremel to smooth it and it happened again this weekend. I have never had areel with a bad spot on it, but I guess anything is possibble...anyone else ever had a similar issue? I hate to even play with switching rods reels to figure out which it is almost as much as I hate to trash a $200.00 set-up. Has cost me 2 spools of line so far, no way I trust it for a tourney. Bummed!
Ham Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 Any chance that you are using banjo technique to free snagged lures? Fluor doesn't like that. Backlash very much? Fluro hates that too. I don't like micro guides much at all. They may be part of it or maybe not WeekendWarrior 1 Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Gavin Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 Remove the guide you messed with, re spool with different line and see if it persists.
Flysmallie Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 A long time ago I had a bunch of Daiwa reels that would let the line get down between the spool and the frame. And they would cut it just like you are talking about. Those were the last Daiwa reels I ever owned. Hammer time 1

Please! I have another rod that will work I can throw them on, just love the feel of the Rage. It's happened at least 5 times now and I'm not willing to risk another fish. I set (swept) on a 2lb fish Sunday and lost 75' of brand new Invis-X. It was probably the 15th fish I had caught that day, this time I was lucky he came up twice and was able to throw the hook and I got my Banjo Minnow back, but unlucky the line ended up n the trolling motor going to get it. I didn't realize fluoro was so sensitive to shock, it gets flat out abused in saltwater.
Hammer time Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 Very interesting and annoying I'm sure. Only response I have is try replacing line. I've been a Shimano guy forever and have never had that problem. Sorry to learn of your problems! mixermarkb 1
Quillback Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 I have a Tatula and have not experienced any issues like yours. You might want to take a look at the T-wing deal to see if there is a burr on it or something that might be nicking your line, that InvisX gets nicked or kinked it can put a weak spot on it.
shrapnel Posted March 22, 2017 Author Posted March 22, 2017 I have 10 Tatulas and this is the only combo I have an issue with. Still not sure I can blame the reel, I'm just gonna switch set-ups.

Go to toss a crank, and the thing would just keep flying, while the other end was caught between the spool and frame. I was a sliw learner and used that reel for 2 years before tossing it in the trash. It happened every other trip out. TinBoats BassClub. An aluminum only bass club. shrapnel Posted March 22, 2017 Author Posted March 22, 2017 It would require a backlash or really sloppy line on the spool for that to happen. You guys filling your spools to the top?
