Rodmaker Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 Just a thought. I know that the dams (and lakes) were built for flood control. What would happen if all of the structures were not in place? What would be the effects of the surrounding areas after a storm like this?

Before the dams, the White River was used as a travel way for part of each year. Steamboats traveled from the Mississippi River as far as Missouri. The old bridge at Cotter was designed to pivot on the center post to allow boat passage. The abandoned hotel in the old part of that town sat near the train station and the port on the river. The cotton and rice farmers of the Arkansas delta were strong supporters of flood control, and for a long time, the primary group protected in water release control. crazy4fishin, vernon, mixermarkb and 1 other 4

It would look like what we have up here in St. Louis on the Meramec which isn't held back by dams. Although levees have really played a big part in the past couple decades on how high the river really gets in places upstream from those levees. It's why we are having record floods year after year now. dblades Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 I think power generation has almost as much to do with lake levels as flood control these days. Water that doesn't go thru the turbine is considered wasted. abkeenan 1
