Jhoff Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 I just started trout fishing last summer so I don't know Taneycomo very well. Are their any good spots to wade below the trophy area that are accessible right know? Thanks for any advice.
JestersHK Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 With the water flowing like it is you will be limited. You may be able to wade out a bit from the bank, but be careful. You'll be able to fish around the outlets some, but they will be crowded. Best bet with this much flow would be go see Phil and rent a boat. If you are fishing spinning gear, I'd recommend starting from the bank, or if you absolutely have to get in the water wade out a bit, from up at the cable by the dam, and work your way down. Good luck and welcome to OA
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted May 24, 2017 Root Admin Posted May 24, 2017 With this flow, there's is hardly no wading oportunities on Taney. There's room for may be 6 people between the cable and outlet 1, 2 spots at outlet 2. That's it. And these fishing spots are not ideal. 30k cfs flow just isn't conducive for wading on Taneycomo. Sorry. When it drops to 20k, it will be better but still limited and tough wade/bank fishing. bassfisher 1
JestersHK Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 They still pushing 30k Phil? Any word on when they might start stepping back? Prolly sometime this summer I'll be down weekend after next.
Travis Swift Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 you might consider the park across from Scotties, the mouth of turkey creek always has a bunch of trout especially with this kind of flows. it would allow for bank fishing at least. renting a boat from lilleys should be your first choice if you can though.
Jhoff Posted May 24, 2017 Author Posted May 24, 2017 My fishing options are wading, kayak, or a small Jon boat with a trolling motor. I may be better off staying home if it's dangerous. Thanks for the advice and good luck fishing.
MoCarp Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 Its not that expensive to get a guide for a 1/2 day, as much $ as one spends for a trip down its worth it, boat out better chance to catch a fish of a life time...thats what Taney can do for you...just saying MONKEYS? what monkeys?
fshndoug Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 better stick with a boat with at least a 25 hp motor.jon boat and trolling motor will not work, too much current.I do not have any experience with anything you have to paddle.always had a motor myself.Like Phil said, wading is very limited due to high water flows. If you don't have any or very little experience on Taney during high water flows this is not the best time to learn regardless what others might say.You can get yourself in trouble in a hurry if you don't know what you are doing, overhanging tress, downed trees, current sweeping you into the bank, you must never anchor in the current.Even pulling into boat docks can be dangerous with lots of current.

Below the trophy area being the key to the question I'm not sure there is anything to wade regardless of the flow. Maybe a little bit at the gravel boat ramp up from Short Creek. Pretty much bank, or boat below the trophy area. Real men go propless!
Haris122 Posted May 25, 2017 Posted May 25, 2017 What would you guys say is a good range of flow and water level for wading at Taneycomo? Never mind on the west side access, think I found something on that.
