I just use 50/50 white vinegar and water, spray on and wipe off with a cotton cloth(old t-shirt rag usually) and it works great.  It will remove the brown funk and hard water spots.  Getting under the bunks or above the tank are another story...let me know if you figure that out.

I don't do it on a lift but I clean my boat with CLR after I've been camped and in and out of the water for a couple of weeks.

I just use straight vinegar on mine does good on the water scum.

Try stale orange juice, I scrubbed my lower unit with vinegar for what seemed like hours, then my wife cleaned it with orange juice in a few minutes.

I just tried it on a calcified gearcase housing and the calcium deposits laughed at me.  They quit laughing when I grabbed the muratic acid though. 😀

Disclaimer: It wasn't "stale OJ", it was fresh cold Minute Maid,  the other half of the bottle was delicious and I bet it tastes way better than toilet bowl cleaner.
